From the Board

Dee MoustakasPresident’s Message
First, I’d like to thank everyone who came to the Retreat. You jumped right into the spirit of the day and I appreciate that. I especially enjoyed the dueling bubbles during the business meeting. Sometimes we need to let go of our roles as executives, wives, daughters, mothers, sisters and simply be. Be silly. Be carefree. Be happy. There was a lot of heartfelt sharing and plenty of giggling going on so I feel as if I achieved my objective.

Second, I’d like to thank everyone who signed up to serve on a committee. You get so much more out of the club when you get involved. And we benefit from your unique talents. I especially would like to encourage new members to help Greetings Committee Chair Nancy Fischer staff the check-in table at the monthly luncheons. It’s the best way for you to meet members, and even more important, for them to get to know you!

Third, Ronnie Karlin has put together a Task Force to work out the kinks in our FX mentor program. At the August luncheon there will be a Task Force member at each table to explain the program, answer questions and solicit comments. We will then study your ideas and see how to incorporate them into the program.

Finally, mark your calendar for Saturday, September 11. Instead of a Cannon Circle in September, we’re having a catered social at Vivien Godfrey’s home. We wanted to have it early to kick off the year. When we were choosing the date, we thought 9/11 was too somber a day to have a social event. Then we thought, what better way to pay tribute than to get together with family and friends and enjoy life –– sort of an affirmation of who we are as Americans. I hope you’ll join us. Stay tuned for details.

I’m honored to be your President and look forward to an exciting year. Feel free to contact me any time with suggestions or questions. You can reach me at 954-771-1809. Dee Moustakas

Girls Just Wanna Have FUN!
And we did!

Thirty-six members showed up at the Westin Hotel for our Annual Retreat in June. Hosted by incoming President Dee Moustakas, the day began with a breakfast buffet. At each member’s place were goody bags filled with bubblegum, Tootsie Pops, chocolates, a bottle of bubbles and a blank nametag. Using the crayons on the table, we all wrote our name on the nametags and then drew three objects that were representative of who we are.

The objects often mentioned as we introduced ourselves were love of travel, books, family, grandchildren, friends, cats and dogs, music, faith and nature. Unusual loves were swimming to meditate, Car & Driver magazine, being a slug in a hammock, Pilates and shamrocks. We learned quite a bit about our fellow members!

After a little bit of business, our surprise guest LollyPop the clown entertained us with team juggling, spelling games and magic tricks. He taught us how to make animal sculptures from long skinny balloons. And boy, some of the animals were quite hilarious –– especially Leigh Nickel’s. He even pulled a live bunny out of an empty box.

Lunch was served in our very own private dining room with children’s puzzles and games for centerpieces. Some of us even stopped eating long enough to assemble the puzzles. (Thank you Pat McCarthy for making everything run so smoothly.)

After lunch, everybody pigged out at the Make Your Sundae Bar. YUM! Then we split up into four groups and played the WEC version of Pictionary. Each member on the winning team received a gift card to Blockbuster and a bag of microwave popcorn.

We ended the day with the “Circle of Life” in which we each shared a favorite childhood memory. Again, we learned much about our fellow members. There were funny stories and sad ones, wistful stories and some so touching that we were transported back to being little girls.

It was a wonderful way to get to know each other better and simply HAVE FUN!
Dee Moustakas

Cannon Circle

Our first Cannon Circle is in October, hosted by Vanessa Koutalidis and Patti Archibaud. It will be the week of October 18 or 25. Exact date will be announced later. For new members, Cannon Circles are hosted at members' homes and provide a more informal atmosphere for us to get to know each other. Please contact Leigh Nickel at 954-423-0006 if you would like to host a Cannon Circle.

The Cannon Circle is named for Past President Shirley Cannon who was known for her gracious and uplifting spirit.

The News Team

A TNT(dynamite) team has been formed to assist with gathering information for the monthly newsletter. The team consists of reporters Patti Archibaud and Amy (Arnold) Van Gent and photographer Joni Rosenthal.

Attention Members! If you haven’t had your picture taken for the directory and the newsletter, please see Joni at the luncheon meeting. She takes great pictures with her little tiny camera.

WEC Book Club:

In 2002, members of WEC who had a common desire for reading and discussions formed the WEC Book Club. The book for discussion is select by the majority and the gathering is held in a member’s home (munchies are always welcome). The meeting schedule varies according to the book and other circumstances. All members are welcome to participate.

Reading a book alone can be a wonderful way of keeping one’s mind active. Sharing and comparing reactions with friends who have read the same book doubles the pleasure! That is what our WEC book club is about. If the selection of the month tickles your fancy, please come check it out!

Our last book, The Kite Runner, a taut and touching story about a family from Afghanistan, got rave reviews from those of us who met to discuss it at Joni's amazing condo. Emily gave it her only 10 so far! (Shakespeare got a 9...) It's a pretty sure bet as a recommendation for those who have not read it -- an intense page-turner. Author Khaled Hosseini.

Lisa LeeThe book we chose for our next gathering, at Lisa Lee’s in Plantation, the evening of Monday, August 30th, is Girl with a Pearl Earring, by Tracy Chevalier. This is the story of a young woman hired as a servant by the 17th-century Dutch painter, Vermeer. She and her master become close..., and she ends up posing as the model for this haunting portrait. Very little is known of Vermeer’s life, and only 35 paintings are attributed to the artist. Yet Vermeer’s subtle depictions of domestic life have come to define the Dutch golden age. Here’s our opportunity to glimpse how it might have been. And to talk about art and love while we munch.

If you have not seen the movie, it might be interesting to hold off until after you read the book, in order to "form your own visuals", as Denise says. If there is a movement to have a group viewing of the DVD, Lisa will be delighted to arrange it. Happy summer reading!

GEM “Greet Eat Meet” Program

Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or what ever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. It is great fun!

The GEM Team has been formed to assist with this program. The committee members are Joann Alderman, Marshia Durham, Christy Lambertus, Gayle Metcalf, and Joni Rosenthal.

We Mean Business

Members be sure and bring your business cards to the luncheons. Each month, the member whose business card is selected gets to be profiled in the newsletter. What a great way to get your business information out to the other members!

The Executive Grapevine: news and notes about WEC members

Barbara Ryan My bed and breakfast, The Goodbread House, is up and running and doing great. I hope you'll all come up here some time for some great r and r. St. Marys is a beautiful little town right on the waterfront, and the gateway to Cumberland Island. It's an easy 5 1/2 hr drive from Ft. Lauderdale or a quick 45 minutes plane ride by Southwest ($39 if you reserve 2 weeks out). Please come see me. I promise a wonderful memory. Visit www.goodbreadhouse.com and go through all the buttons to see what it's like. Hope to see you all soon.
Warmest regards

Nancy Fischer A new year means new faces. And speaking of new faces, Nancy Fischer has joined us from Professional Process Servers & Investigators, Inc. where she is Vice President and owner, along with her husband, Bob Fischer. Nancy will be heading our Greetings Committee and she welcomes any help. (This is an especially good committee for new members to serve on.) Anyone interested in assisting at the Greetings table for our luncheons should call her office at (954) 566-2523.

She will be sending out a monthly email reminder of the luncheon date and
choice of menu. Her friendly staff will be glad to take your menu choice. She says she is excited about being part of such a dynamic group of women and looks forward to meeting each and every one of you.

Dee Moustakas and Ann Meacham staffed a WEC table at the Women's Expo on Saturday, July 31.

Patty Camp recently moved to Arizona. She said that everything is going great for her. She sold her condo and it is closing on it July 30th. Her biggest challenge is getting all of her stuff into David's, oops, their house! They are working on a wedding date - will probably be in the next month or two. She has her Arizona real estate license and plans to capitalize on the new construction going on there. We sure do miss you, Patti and are really happy for you!

Ronnie Karlin Members Doing Business with Members:
Thanks Dee for doing our Global Resource Partners website copy! We are re-branding and she added to our fresh new look with fresh new verbiage!

Shana Munden is now a CLHMS.Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist. She passed the schooling and difficult sales requirements in order to obtain this honor. Congratulations, Shana!

Vivien Godfrey will be sworn in as a US citizen on August 10th at the Miami Convention Center with about 5,000 other people!

Her business has just launched a new website, www.bluewaterweb.com
They have been selling over the internet for eight years but the new site is completely redesigned and has a fantastic search engine. They sell lots of products for boaters including lots of great gift ideas. It’s not too soon to start thinking about Holiday Gifts!

Gayle Metcalf ‘s daughter Christie is engaged and will be married in Fort Lauderdale on October 9th.

Chris Guld was recently mentioned in a Miami Herald article (June 23, 2004). "Chris and her husband Jim are out to prove it is possible to invent a new work/life scenario - to creatively balance work with the thirst for adventure. The two had operated computer businesses in Fort Lauderdale for nearly two decades before selling their home and heading off in their RV.

Their vision: build a business that allows them to be on the road, hooking up RV parks across the country to provide wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) to their guests. They also help the park offices and fellow RVers with websites, e-mail and other computer issues. For the Gulds, this is not a temporary arrangement, it's a new lifestyle."

Check out Chris' weblog at www.jimandchris.com for lots of photos. She's in Oregon right now, but remains an active member of WEC thru the Internet.
