WEC Member Receives Special Recognition:
ART AND CULTURE CENTER VOLUNTEER RECEIVES STAR AWARD

Art and Culture Center Volunteer Receives Star Award
Hollywood, Fla. – Drazia Rubenstein, co-chair of the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s Cuisine for Art fund-raiser for the last two years, recently received the 2004 ArtServe Star Award. Rubenstein accepted her award at the 15th Annual ArtServe Encore Awards ceremony held on Friday, May 21 at the Design Center of the Americas. The Star Award recognizes outstanding volunteers in South Florida’s arts community.

“Drazia’s selfless dedication to improving the lives of others makes her a shining ‘star’ in her community who is truly worthy of ArtServe’s Star Award,” said Art and Culture Center Executive Director Cynthia B. Miller. “She is integral to the success of our Cuisine for Art fund-raiser. Without her countless hours of hard work and perseverance, this event would not be possible.”

A successful entrepreneur and professional certified coach of business and professional people, the Aventura resident always finds time in her busy schedule to help out a good cause. Aside from helping spearhead the Art and Culture Center’s Cuisine for Art fund-raiser for the last two years, Rubenstein also was co-chair of the Center’s 2002 Crystal Vision Gala, its major annual fund-raising event.

Rubenstein’s tireless dedication to her profession and charitable causes does not end with the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. Aside from being past president of the Miami Chapter of the International Coaches Federation and a member of the Ethics Standards and Conduct Committee for the International Coaches Federation, she teaches weekly classes for residents of Broward Outreach Center, is a part of the Mentoring Committee for the Women’s Executive Club, is a Grievance Committee member for The Florida Bar, and is a member of Festival Tropicale’s Bacchus Krewe. She also is very active in the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Aside from being an ambassador and member of its Board of Directors, she also has been chair for several years of its “Operation Thank You” event and is a member of the chamber’s Expo Alfresco Committee.

The Executive Grapevine

Ginny Forster was recently elected to the Board of the Stewardess Alumnae Association (SAA) as the Second Vice President for the 2004-05 term. This 40 year old organization of 80+ former and current flight attendants from over 20 different current airlines (many no longer in existence) is based here in South Florida. Though primarily a social organization, the membership also generously supports two charities on an annual bases. Any WEC members, who may have been flight attendants in their former lives, interested in more information or attending the SAA's next event as a guest, should contact Ginny Forster directly at (954) 308-6084.

Barbara Ryan is now the proud proprietor of The Goodbread House Bed and Breakfast Inn in St. Marys, Georgia. Barbara hopes that all WEC members will eventually make their way up to St. Marys (the country's 2nd oldest town), and enjoy a visit to Cumberland Island where wild horses roam and the Carnegies have left their legacy. St. Marys is an historical, quaint town that sits on the river that divides Georgia from Florida. Barbara's B&B is just a block from the Riverfront. She promises tranquility, a huge dose of Southern hospitality, gorgeous breakfasts, and a home with a big heart and warm spirit. You can call Barbara at 912-882-7490, or visit the web site at www.goodbreadhouse.com.

Denise Cooper Ross is excited to share that she recently returned from beautiful Portland, Maine where she completed training in Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster. Medical studies show that people who prepare for an operation have less pain, fewer complications, and recover sooner. (Yeah!) This program is endorsed by Andrew T. Weil, MD, Christiane Northrup, MD, and Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., to name a few. Denise would be happy to help you, your friends, or family members benefit from learning the techniques to assist healing during this potentially stressful time.

Attention Golfers

Judith Schleifstein has invited WEC members to participate in golf:

I would like to extend an invitation to any WEC member to join a group of Professional Business Women, who meet every Wednesday at Bonaventure Country Club at 5 pm to play 9-holes of golf. The cost is $15.00 and includes a beverage. This is a great way to network in a fun setting. You can attend every week or once in a while. Play your own game. No beginners please, but no handicap needed!

If you are interested, contact Judith at 954-762-4400 or 888-558-2152 or www.jmsonline.com

WEC BOOK CLUB:

In 2002, members of WEC who had a common desire for reading and discussions formed the WEC Book Club. The book for discussion is select by the majority and the gathering is held in a member’s home (munchies are always welcome). The meeting schedule varies according to the book and other circumstances. All members are welcome to participate.

The Cannon Circle will convene at Debbie McLaughlin’s home on Monday, June 7th, to discuss the book ‘The Secret Life of Bees’. A bestseller book about a young girl in the South during the dawn of Civil Rights discovering her past (which unfortunately includes her accidentally murdering her mother when she was four) and the memory of the "Black Madonna". It celebrates the relationship of mother and daughter.

Please RSVP by June 1st to Debbie - by e-mail or call at 305-503-1340, ext. 21.

Women Empowering Women Program

The "Women Empowering Women" (WEW) program, started in 1996, provides financial assistance and member services support to females in the workplace who need help to further their education.

Do You Know ... someone who is re-entering the workforce? . . . trying to advance in her career? . . . could use a “leg up”?

Our Women Empowering Women (WEW) program provides scholarships and mentoring to women who are either going to work after staying at home for a period of time or who want to transition from an hourly position to management.

If you meet Kim Styles, our current scholarship recipient, you’ll see a bright woman working on her Masters in communication. Kim has the promise and drive to be an executive. We’re helping her do that through financial and moral support!

Please help us identify someone. It can be a family member, co-worker, friend, or friend of a friend. Call (954-344-9892) or email Ann Meacham with ideas or questions.

Special FX Mentor Program

NEW PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN JANUARY

Read January’s newsletter or contact Ronnie Karlin for more information or to volunteer for this exciting new adventure.

GEM “Greet Eat Meet” Program

Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or what ever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. It is great fun!

Thank you for all of those members who have participated and those who have been a Lead person. The members who have attended reported only positive feelings and look forward to the next get together.

WEC MISSION STATEMENT
