2004 WEC RetreatAre you ready for some FUN? Are you prepared to giggle and maybe even act a little silly? Good! Because that’s what we’ll be doing at the WEC Retreat on Saturday, June 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Starting with a Continental breakfast and a get-to-know-each-other icebreaker, you’ll hear what the new president and Board members have in store for the upcoming year. Then the real FUN begins. Followed by lunch and even more FUN & GAMES!
The Retreat is a MUST for everyone –– especially new members. The casual, informal setting is perfect for really getting to know each other. So, join us at the Westin Hotel (Pat’s Place) on Cypress Creek. You won’t want to miss it!
For more information: Contact Dee Moustakas at 954-771-1809. There will be invitations with RSVP at the May and June luncheons. Cost: $35
Members get together in a more informal atmosphere during the year.
These evening socials are called "Cannon Circles" and are hosted
at members' homes. The Cannon Circle is named for Past President Shirley
Cannon who was known for her gracious and uplifting spirit.

The membership requirement is to attend a minimum of five (5) meetings every year in order to maintain regular membership. This is calculated on a fiscal year basis (i.e. August-June, not calendar year). Below are the names of all WEC members and the number of luncheons attended for the current fiscal year.
Carolyn Ernest-Jones' son Eddie came in 28th in the Boston Marathon. He was 22nd in the men's and the first Floridian over the finish line. He is a very dedicated runner - and runs about 95 miles per week. Note: He does not get this from his mother!
Shana Munden was just notified that she was in the Top 100 Real Estate Agents in Broward County. Her daughter in law will be our guest speaker this month. She was Rookie of the year for her Drag Racing and one of the top racers in the USA with speeds up to 170 miles per hour. What an accomplishment.
Patty Camp has moved to Phoenix and will not be attending our meetings,
but encourages members to talk about positive experiences with other
members at our regular luncheon meetings. Patty wrote the following
success story.
I had Radial Keratotomy (RK), the surgical precursor to Lasik,
a number of years ago and since that time my near and far-sighted
vision has deteriorated to the point where I was again considering
contacts. I had been to an Ophthalmologist who was unable to correct
my vision satisfactorily with contacts. I happened to sit next
to Dr. Cynthia Hardy at a WEC luncheon and told her of my disappointing
experience. She explained to me that she specialized in hard-to-fit
patients and in fact had patients who had the same problem and
she was able to fit them with gas permeable contact lenses (a process
which can be very difficult with RK patients due to the reshaping
of the cornea). So I went to see Dr. Hardy who performed an extremely
thorough examination of my eyes and did an absolutely fantastic
job fitting me with gas permeable lenses. I now have normal vision
again with both reading and distance and am absolutely thrilled
with the outcome. I would encourage any member who has not had
her eyes checked recently or is considering contacts to see Dr.
Hardy. She's the best!
Jan Nelson has moved to Summerfield, Florida. She has a very humorous
and eventfully story about moving into her new home. We will miss
you, Jan.
As many of you know, WEC has had a password-protected 'Intranet' on the web for a few years now. This is where information on every member is stored and it is the program we use to send out emails to all members. It provides us with one place to keep emails up-to-date so that we are all working from the same list. It also has a 'documents' area, calendar, and announcements.
The problem is that the Intranet is a separate database from the official 'membership' database which gives us our printed directory and historical data. The other problem is that only a few people use the Intranet because it is a little overwhelming. The board voted to give the job to Chris Guld to create a custom website, just for WEC, to replace the current wecftl.Intranets.com site. The goal is twofold: 1) use the same database, on the web, for emails and for directory/historical data 2) make it easier to use for WEC members.
The bottom line is this: the current Intranet site will be discontinued at the end of May and a new site will take it's place. If you have anything on the Intranet site that you don't want to lose, make sure to download it during this month. If there are features you especially like and would like to see built into the new site, send email to Chris Guld. And, if you have anything on your 'wish list', let her know that too. One of the main advantages to the membership is that the complete, printable, directory will soon be available on this website.
WEC
BOOK CLUB:In 2002, members of WEC who had a common desire for reading and discussions formed the WEC Book Club. The book for discussion is select by the majority and the gathering is held in a member’s home (munchies are always welcome). The meeting schedule varies according to the book and other circumstances. All members are welcome to participate.
The Book Club had a great time at Geri's discussing the delightful Seabiscuit. Everyone enjoyed the book and most were very pleasantly surprised that they did. Emily even predicted Smarty Jones winning the Derby, wish I'd had a bet on it!!!
The next Book Club gathering will be a Debra McLaughlins home on
Monday, June 7th, to discuss The
Secret Life of Bees. The book is
about a young girl in the South during the dawn of Civil Rights discovering
her past (which unfortunately includes her accidently murdering her
mother when she was four) and the memory of the "Black Madonna".
It celebrates the relationship of mother and daughter.
All members are welcome to attend.
The "Women Empowering Women" (WEW) program, started in 1996, provides financial assistance and member services support to females in the workplace who need help to further their education.
Do You Know ... someone who is re-entering the workforce? . . . trying to advance in her career? . . . could use a “leg up”?
Please help us identify someone. It can be a family
member, co-worker, friend, or friend of a friend. Call (954-344-9892)
or email Ann Meacham with
ideas or questions.
NEW PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN JANUARY
Read January’s
newsletter or contact Ronnie
Karlin for more information
or to volunteer for this exciting new adventure.
Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or what ever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. It is great fun!

Words of Wisdom:
Friends are like MATH
They multiply your joy,
And divide your sorrow..
They subtract the past,
And add to tomorrow..
They calculate the need
Deep in your heart,
And are always greater
Than the sum of their parts!
