Program: Prospective Member Luncheon

The October luncheon is when we invite prospective members and showcase what WEC has to offer. Please put on your thinking caps and extend invitations to women who meet our membership criteria and who would enjoy.

If you have sent invitations to business friends, please give them a call to encourage them to come. It is a fabulous setting, the food is wonderful, and it’s a great opportunity to learn from and meet with our colleagues. Any questions, please call or e-mail Marilynn Obrig, VP-Membership at 954-600-6464 or mobrig@bellsouth.net.

From the Board

Dee MoustakasPresident’s Message
All the stormy weather didn’t keep members and their significant others (about 30 in all) from attending our first social at Vivien Godfrey’s on September 11. Everyone brought a favorite appetizer or dessert. Boy, can you guys cook.

Geri Trodick’s husband Dick was wrapping tasty morsels of fresh lobster (that he caught) in bacon and broiling them while we all waited eagerly for a bite. We had Cowboy Caviar; endive with blue cheese and nuts; baked Brie; spinach dip; fresh shrimp cocktail; cheeses, crackers, dried fruit and much more. Not to mention our favorite brews and wines. The appetizers and dessert were so delicious and plentiful we could have done without the catered dinner.

Kim StilesWe had 50 members and guests at our September luncheon, including our current WEW scholar, Kim Stiles, and Raquel Cunningham, one of our FX associate members. Also joining us was a potential WEW candidate Patricia McCarthy. (See accompanying article.)

Vivien GodfreyWhen our speaker canceled the day before the luncheon, I asked Vivien Godfrey to help share the WEC Hurricane Preparedness Plan with our members. In her own inimitable style, she donned her bright yellow foul weather gear and proceeded to regale us with charts and weather-related books from her store along with Dave Barry’s humor column on Hurricane Preparation. Linda Chapman then told us the Top 10 Reasons Why Hurricane Season is Like Christmas. (If you missed the luncheon, both “funnies” can be found elsewhere in this newsletter.)

Even though the past weeks had been stressful for everyone, we all left laughing! Thanks Vivien and Linda. You really turned a dreary day sunny!

Remember, October 15 is our Prospective Member luncheon. Please invite women whom you think would benefit from knowing us and vice versa. This is our opportunity to showcase our businesses and all the programs and social events WEC offers us as members.

Let’s have a really BIG turnout!

Preparation

Last month’s guest speaker had to cancel, but this did not stop creative Vivien Godfrey. She said “The program will go on! We were honored and privileged to have her keep us entertained and laughing with her very appropriate presentation on Hurricane Preparedness. She even illustrated the proper clothing for such an event! So many of you requested copies of what Vivien presented, we decided to include it here. Plus, we added “Things We’ve Learned while Living in Florida”. Thank you, Vivien for all your wonderful information.

Women Empowering Women (WEW) Program Has New Member

Pat McCarthyAt the October 1 Board meeting, we voted to provide Pat McCarthy with financial and member support through our WEW Program. Pat is a single mom with a 7-year-old autistic son who found herself unemployable in her chosen field of graphics design after the company where she worked was acquired. She is exactly the type of woman we had in mind when we created this program several years ago, and with our help will be able to finish her degree and reach her full potential.
WEW is a program where we offer financial assistance to a woman who, with just a little help and support, can better her circumstances. Typically we help with college or vocational tuition, books and school supplies. (This is where some of the money we raise goes.) However, we provide more than money. We put the resources of the entire membership at her disposal. For instance, if she needs help writing a resume or getting ready for a job interview, she can turn to one of our members for advice.
When she’s not studying, Pat enjoys computer art, classic cars (she should have been at our Gala), motorcycles and playing with her son. Please welcome Pat and let her know how you can help her achieve her goals.
Pat was brought to our attention by Denise Cooper-Ross who read her story in the Sun-Sentinel. Thanks Denise!

Future Executive (FX) Mentor Program

We need your involvement to make our Mentorship Program a success! Thank you in advance to everyone who has already volunteered! We want to know what “gift” you have that you are willing to share with an FX (future executive). Your “gift” may be anything in life – something work related, socially or technically oriented, etc. Would you spend some time with an FX at our WEC functions? Lunch, GEM, Book Club, Cannon Circle, etc.? Ronnie Karlin

Welcome New Members:

Melissa Rapkin Melissa Rapkin has lived in South Florida since 1982. She has been married to Andy Berns for fifteen years and they have a son, Dylan. Dylan is in the sixth grade at Pine Crest School.
Melissa and Andy own a business called Documents2Disc. They convert paper documents to CDs for businesses and individuals. This process not only allows instant access to important papers, but also frees up valuable space while providing security of the information. It is especially a great concept for South Florida because of the expensive office space and the dreaded hurricanes.

We Mean Business

Members be sure and bring your business cards to the luncheons. Each month, the member whose business card is selected gets to be profiled in the newsletter. What a great way to get your business information out to the other members!

WEC Book Club:

In 2002, members of WEC who had a common desire for reading and discussions formed the WEC Book Club. The book for discussion is select by the majority and the gathering is held in a member’s home (munchies are always welcome). The meeting schedule varies according to the book and other circumstances. All members are welcome to participate.

I would personally like to invite you to participate in our book club. It is a wonderful way to get to know each other and have an interesting discussion about the book we are reading. You do not have to read every book....only the ones that interest you!
Current book: "Founding Mothers: The Women that raised our nation" by Cokie Roberts. Click here to read a description of the book.
Our discussion will be held at my home in Plantation on October 20, 2004 at 6:30PM. Everyone brings a little something for a pot luck supper. I'll supply the wine and beverages.

Warmest regards, Jan Herard

Attention Members! If you haven’t had your picture taken for the directory and the newsletter, please see Joni at the luncheon meeting. She takes great pictures with her little tiny camera.

GEM “Greet Eat Meet” Program

Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or what ever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. It is great fun!

The GEM Team has been formed to assist with this program. The committee members are Joann Alderman, Marshia Durham, Christy Lambertus, Gayle Metcalf, and Joni Rosenthal.

The Executive Grapevine: news and notes about WEC members

Melissa Rapkin is chairing a charity golf and tennis tournament. The money raised goes to scholarships for children to attend summer camp and after-school programs. The tournament will be held Oct. 15th at the Woodmont Country Club. Since this is a private club, this may be the only opportunity some people have to play this course. She is looking for people who might want to golf or play tennis, sponsor holes, or donate raffle prizes. For more information contact Melissa at 954 545-0123.

Pam Dearden will be honored as one of the “Women of Style & Substance” on Oct. 21. Christie Lambertus was honored a couple of years ago. Congratulations, Pam.

Betsy Grant left South Florida in June and is still traveling. She says she will start back if the silly storms ever give her a break. Further, that traveling in her VW convertible is worse than being in a trailer.

Betsy stopped in St. Mary’s Georgia and spent time at Barbara Ryan’s Bread and Breakfast. It was great being the first WEC person to visit with Barbara. She says that we should all plan a weekend as it is only around a six hour drive.
