From the Board

Dee MoustakasPresident’s Message
Our first meeting of WEC’s new year was great fun! There was an air of excitement as members checked out the Tower Club and the new surroundings.

The only real hitch in the luncheon was the tardiness of the dessert. I have to take full responsibility for that. You see, Crème Brulee is my absolute favorite and when I saw it on the TC menu, I jumped on it. The only problem (which I didn’t realize until too late) is that you can’t preset that kind of dessert. I think those who were able to stay a little extra, were glad they did. It was sinfully delicious!

Ronnie Karlin put together a task force to help figure out how to get the Future Executive (FX) Mentor program off the ground. She had a task force member seated at each table with handouts highlighting the program’s objectives and requirements.

Instead of Table Talk, we took 10 minutes to answer questions and then gather suggestions from all members. Ronnie has compiled the information and is forming a committee to match FX needs with members’ talents. (See Ronnie’s article elsewhere in this newsletter.) Thank you to task force members Ronnie Karlin, Christy Lambertus, Laticia Latino, Pat McCarthy, Melissa Rapkin and Judith Schleifstein.

We have a potential candidate for our Women Empowering Women program, and she will be at our September luncheon. Her name is Pat McCarthy (yes, just like our long-time member). Please introduce yourself and get to know her. For our new members, WEW is a program where we offer financial assistance to a woman who, with just a little help and support, can better her circumstances.

Typically we help with college or vocational tuition, books and school supplies. (This is where some of the money we raise goes.) However, we provide more than money. We put the resources of the entire membership at her disposal. For instance, if she needs help writing a resume or getting ready for a job interview, she can turn to one of our members for advice.

I hope you’ve sent in your RSVP to Vivien Godfrey for our first social of the year. Vivien and husband John have a house just made to party in. Spouses and significant others are welcome, too. Please join us for a good time! Thank you Vivien, Carol Jones and Barbara Moorman for organizing the event.

Don’t forget the October luncheon is when we invite prospective members and showcase what WEC has to offer. Please put on your thinking caps and extend invitations to women who meet our membership criteria and who would enjoy being a part of our group. Marilynn Obrig will have invitations at the September luncheon.

See you on Tuesday, September 14, and remember to always seek the heights.

Future Executive (FX) Mentor Program

We need your involvement to make our Mentorship Program a success! Thank you in advance to everyone who has already volunteered! We want to know what “gift” you have that you are willing to share with an FX (future executive). Your “gift” may be anything in life – something work related, socially or technically oriented, etc. Would you spend some time with an FX at our WEC functions? Lunch, GEM, Book Club, Cannon Circle, etc.? Ronnie Karlin

WEC Book Club:

In 2002, members of WEC who had a common desire for reading and discussions formed the WEC Book Club. The book for discussion is select by the majority and the gathering is held in a member’s home (munchies are always welcome). The meeting schedule varies according to the book and other circumstances. All members are welcome to participate.

Geri TrodickThis is an invitation to all members to join us at our book club. You don’t have to be an “avid” reader because we usually have more than enough time to read the book we select. I joined the book club to read books I might not even think about reading and have enjoyed the experience. I also thought that maybe the discussions would be “like going to school”, but that has not been the case. The discussions have been very interesting and FUN. This is just another way to get to know some of the WEC members. Please join us – you don’t even have to read the book – you can just sit in on our discussions and share a glass of wine and some food with us.

The next book and date will be announced.
Geri Trodick

Cannon Circle

Our first Cannon Circle is in October, hosted by Vanessa Koutalidis and Patti Archibaud. It will be the week of October 18 or 25. Exact date will be announced later. For new members, Cannon Circles are hosted at members' homes and provide a more informal atmosphere for us to get to know each other. Please contact Leigh Nickel at 954-423-0006 if you would like to host a Cannon Circle.

The Cannon Circle is named for Past President Shirley Cannon who was known for her gracious and uplifting spirit.

The News Team

A TNT(dynamite) team has been formed to assist with gathering information for the monthly newsletter. The team consists of reporters Patti Archibaud and Amy (Arnold) Van Gent and photographer Joni Rosenthal.

Attention Members! If you haven’t had your picture taken for the directory and the newsletter, please see Joni at the luncheon meeting. She takes great pictures with her little tiny camera.

GEM “Greet Eat Meet” Program

Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or what ever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. It is great fun!

The GEM Team has been formed to assist with this program. The committee members are Joann Alderman, Marshia Durham, Christy Lambertus, Gayle Metcalf, and Joni Rosenthal.

The Executive Grapevine: news and notes about WEC members

Marilynn Obrig has great news. She, her son and partner, Craig Kessinger are joining Intercoastal Realty this month. She says Yay! I’ll be with Beth again!

Emily Rushin will be vacationing in southwest France mid September to October 7. She has rented a wonderful, old stone farmhouse and expects to paint the medieval villages, hills and mountains, rivers and valleys in the lovely Indian summer - when she's not drinking the Bordeaux wine for which the region is duly famous. Lisa Lee is going to visit her a few days. That's really neat!

Donna Goldstein would like to share some exciting news. One of her former clients, Dr. Joan Borysenko, a best selling author, has written a column for October’s Prevention magazine (11 million readers) on how Donna helped her recover from burnout. At the end of her column Donna’s website was listed. Donna is humbled by the recommendation and discussion. It is a wonderful testament to the power of a solid coaching relationship! This may keep Donna and her team of fine coaches busy for a while.

Joni Rosenthal : I was given the most beautiful presentation of my lifetime. Three weeks in Cannes, France this summer where I had the opportunity to stay at the Majestic Hotel which is right on the Crosiette. Every day and evening, I looked out at the Mediterranean Sea from my third floor balcony.

I had the privilege of a new moon that shone so brightly. Three times during my stay, we had the most gorgeous fireworks. Hopefully, I can share some of my fabulous pictures. I took them with the thought of eventually framing some on canvas cloth. If done correctly, the photo almost looks like a painting. Especially noteworthy is a composition with any scenery or flowers. They take to this process very well.

I hope that my aspiration to learn more French will continue so that I get going to a class. The language is magnificent. The people were very loving and especially to dogs. They love their pets. The friend that I went to France with brought her small poodle. She took Chardaney "little lady" everywhere (restaurants included and on her lap). Chardaney was presented with a bowl of water and most of the time without our asking. A yummy feeling.

This was my first real vacation since 1985 and I shall treasure this memory forever. I feel so fortunate to have chosen to visit this beautiful country and to risk falling down on the cobble stones. My wheelie and I made a great statement. No one in this country had seen a walker on wheels. Children loved ringing the horn. I truly felt that I had touched heaven on earth. The superlatives reign. Viva la France. Viva la America.
