Program:
Charitable Involvement
Guest Speakers: Vivien Godfrey, Barbara Weinstein and Marsha Linville
Vivien will present some information and statistics about charitable giving
in general and volunteering activity. With the recent Tsunami there has
been a lot of information in the press about how Americans as a nation
are much less generous than other developed countries and less generous
than they think they are! Yikes!!!
Barbara and Marsha wish to thank WEC for their generous gift donations
for Christmas. Barbara will speak about Family Central and Marsha will
speak about Woodhouse. They will enlighten us about involvement and volunteering
as it relates to their facilities and operations.
President’s Message
Happy
New Year!
As
you can see from the pictures (so graciously taken by Joni Rosenthal),
we had a really wonderful time at the holiday luncheon. Pat McCarthy made
sure the room was decked out in such a festive manner. From the red and
green napkins to the poinsettias on the table, everything was lovely! As
many of you know, I’m not a dessert person, but I practically inhaled
the White Chocolate Tartufo. Thank you, Pat, for your attention to every
detail.

We recognized several members who reached membership milestones: Marilynn
Obrig, 5 years; Ann Meacham, 10 years, Lee Sheffield, 15 years; and me
for 20 years! It was especially meaningful for me to receive my 20-year
pin while serving as President. Thank you Ronnie for helping me present
the pins.
I hope to see everyone in January. We have several new members to introduce.
In the meantime hug your friends and family, pray for peace and make 2005
your best ever!
Cheers!
Dee
Future Executive (FX) Mentor Program
We need your involvement to make our Mentorship Program a success! Thank
you in advance to everyone who has already volunteered! We want to
know what “gift” you have that you are willing to share with an
FX (future executive). Your “gift” may be anything in life – something
work related, socially or technically oriented, etc. Would you spend
some time with an FX at our WEC functions? Lunch, GEM, Book Club, Cannon
Circle, etc.? Ronnie Karlin

WEC
Book Club:
In 2002, members of WEC who had a common desire for reading and discussions
formed the WEC Book Club. The book for discussion is select by the majority
and the gathering is held in a member’s home (munchies are always
welcome). The meeting schedule varies according to the book and other circumstances.
All members are welcome to participate.
The Book Club will meet on Monday, January 24, 2005, at 6:30 to discuss
William Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying" at Emily Rushin's home. All
members are welcome! Bring a dish to share and Emily will provide the wine
or other beverages. Yes, the holidays are a busy time, but be good to yourself!
Put your feet up and read a great (and short!) book. "As I Lay Dying" is
so good it has made the transition from Fiction to Literature. Our discussions
aren't dry and dull but based on our life experiences. We'd love for you
to come. Emily
Cannon
Circle
For new members, Cannon Circles are hosted at members’ homes
and provide a more informal atmosphere for us to get to know each other.
Please contact Leigh Nickel at 954-423-0006 if you would like to host a
Cannon Circle.
The Cannon Circle is named for Past President Shirley Cannon who was known
for her gracious and uplifting spirit.

GEM “Greet Eat Meet” Program
Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for
an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat
and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast,
lunch, dinner or what ever. This is a great opportunity to get to know
each other on a more personal level. It is great fun!
The GEM Team has been formed to assist with this program. The committee
members are Joann Alderman, Marshia Durham, Christy Lambertus, Gayle Metcalf,
and Joni Rosenthal.

Deb McLaughlin's children are both now in college in Orlando - Sarah is
majoring in Hospitality at UCF and is consistently on the Dean's List
and inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars; Jonathan
is at the top of his class in Video Game Design at Full Sail. Both should
graduate in 2006! In case you haven't heard, I live in Hallandale now
(1333 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd., #330, 33009) and happily work at Majic
102.7 Radio (WMXJ) as an Account Executive.
PS - Come to the WEC Book Club - we read a book every six weeks or so,
have a lively discussion, eat a fun meal with a few sips of wine, and enjoy
the company of some of our favorite people. I am very thankful for these
wonderful women. Our next one is January 29th at Emily Rushin's house and
we're reading Faulkner's As I Lay Dying (a very short classic). You can
help choose the next one by coming!

Nancy Fischer writes: I just came back from a fabulous two weeks in Paris,
France. My husband was so wonderful to take me there for my 50th birthday,
which was December 18. The evening was spent at the Moulin Rouge where
we met two other couples who spoke English and had a most enjoyable evening!
Paris was just simply the best present a person could get! We skipped
the holiday traditions this year but made new ones this year.
We were blessed with a most wonderful Christmas we ever had. This is the
first year we did not purchase any gifts for each other but we figured
this trip was a wonderful gift in itself, but the best part was meeting
up with a friend that we have known for over 25 years but had not seen
in at least 10 years! We had made friends with Parin and her husband, Maurice,
while we were living in Africa when we were young and foolish (and serving
our government). Parin is just two years older than I and we had so much
in common. Our friendship grew stronger after we left, but sad to say that
Maurice passed away when he was only 32 years old (just over a year after
we left Africa). Parin was left with a three year old and a one year old
to raise on her own. She moved to Belgium and we kept in touch via letters
all these years. We even met up with her 10 years ago in Disney for an
afternoon; her daughters were just 14 and 12 then.
Parin now works for
the European Union in the Criminal Justice Division as Media and Communications
liaison and is living at the Hagen in the Netherlands. Her daughters
are living in Lyon, France and are now 24 and 22 years old. She called
me for
my birthday in Paris and told me she was going to be in Lyon for Christmas.
We consulted a train listing and found out that it was only 2 hours away
by train. Off we went Dec 24, and I have to tell you it was the most
wonderful Christmas I have had in a long time. To see our friend and spend
Christmas
eve and Christmas day with her and her daughters was something emotionally
that no commercial gift could have ever given me. Her youngest daughter
is a miniature of her father that looking at her filled my heart with
so much love I almost couldn't bear it. The girls prepared us a typical
American
Christmas dinner (and none of them cook). We were able to share stories
we remembered of her mother and father and It all went so fast that we
wanted to capture each and every second!
All good things must come to a close but I have to say that the last
two weeks will certainly stay in my heart for a long time.
I wish everyone a wonderful Happy New Year and hope this next year is
all everyone wants it to be.

Shana
Munden is queen of a Red Hat Society group and went to a convention
at Gaylord Palms in Orlando. She had a wonderful weekend with all those
vibrant women. Happy and Healthy New Year to all....

Virginia Forster writes:
We went to Boston to enjoy Christmas with my family. Despite reports of
no expected snow until the day after we were
scheduled to return to Florida, they had a surprise snowstorm, a day early.
Ever optimistic, we headed to the airport after scraping the ice and snow
off the rental car, and slipping our way along unplowed roads that had
begun to ice over in the 23 degree temperatures. After a delightful 5 hours
delay, we were one of the 15% of the schedule that took off right before
they closed the Airport for the 18" of snowfall they eventually received.
Suddenly, I was much better able to put in perspective all those endless
hurricanes of the past season and, in retrospect, they really didn't seem
all that bad compared to the alternative!
The News Team
A TNT(dynamite) team has been formed to assist with gathering information
for the monthly newsletter. The team consists of reporters Patti
Archibaud and Amy (Arnold)
Van Gent and photographer Joni
Rosenthal.
Attention Members! If you haven’t had your picture taken for the
directory and the newsletter, please see Joni at the luncheon meeting.
She takes great pictures with her little tiny camera.

Spirit Wishes
May the years ahead offer you a peaceful ride with the wind.
May the sun light your way as gentle waters
And carry you to places of undiscovered joys.
From sunrise to sunset, may your day be a journey of the imagination and
spirit.
May love and joy rush through your day like a cool mountain stream.
May the path be smooth beneath your feet,
And may your heart be as free as the wind.
For the strength of your spirit,
The gentleness of your heart,
And the courage of your dreams,
You are greatly admired.
