From the Board

The August luncheon was very well attended. Welcome back! Summer is over and we’re getting back into the swing of things!
Along with friends and family, 26 of us attended the Women’s Theatre Project If We Are Women. As promised by Meredith Lasher, our August speaker and President of Women’s Theatre Project, the play spoke loudly to the Project’s vision “to create compelling theatrical experiences that explore the female voice; theatre by women, about women, for everyone.” They have received rave reviews. A good time was had by all!

Our September speaker, Ron Magill is a draw whenever he speaks. You can see him at Metro Zoo, on Animal Planet or at the Tower Club for our September luncheon. Who, you ask. Ron is the Communications Director at the Zoo. And he’s bringing a “friend”. Who, you ask, again. We don’t know yet. He keeps them under wraps.

October is our NEW MEMBER Luncheon. We will be honoring Lynda Amorello,
Barbara Moorman and JoAnn Alderman for 10 years membership, Leigh Nickel for 15
years and Beth Beaucamp for 20 years. Congratulations, to all! Anyone who has a pin from previous years, please wear it! I’ve set a very aggressive goal for membership! 25 new members this year! We want the club to still be around in 20 years so that we can all receive our 20 year pins, as well. Please do your part. Think about all that you’ve enjoyed about being a member. Share that with friends, family and anyone you do business with! Your doctor, your insurance
agent, the chef at your favorite restaurant…

There will be lots of activities this year. It is our goal to have something for everyone!
Visit www.wecftl.com regularly! We are putting all club information at your fingertips! If you need any assistance on the web, contact me 305-819-2500 or Chris Guld chris@guldsystems.com.

Thanks for all the ways you do participate!

Women Empowering Women

Patricia McCarthy writes:
I designed a logo for Kim Stiles, a former WEW recipient and now an active member of WEC. Kim will be using Ritter’s Printing to print her stationery and business cards.
Kim Stiles writes:
I have started a new business “Legacy Training Group” and I’m using Pat McCarthy’s work and Ritter’s Printing to get started. Also I would like to thank the members of the club for giving me the courage to start my own business -teaching- instead of taking the safer route and working for the University (full time hours for a part time position with no benefits!!!).

WEC Book Club:

The WEC Book has chosen Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God” to read before their next meeting on Wednesday, October 26, at Emily Rushin’s house. First published in 1937, this novel has been a staple of Feminist and Black Studies in universities for many years. Hurston is a genuine Florida writer and well-worth reading for that alone. Don’t let the “intellectual” aspect scare you off!
Hurston’s Janie Crawford is a compelling, powerful, articulate, and self-reliant woman.
Hers is a rich and racy love story that will delight you once you get into the musical
rhythm of the dialect. Do join us! We meet at 6:30 to share a potluck supper to which everyone contributes, then sit and talk for hours. As Deb McLaughlin says, “Sometimes even about the book!”

Season First Cannon Circle

We kicked off our new year with a combination Home/Business Cannon Circle. More than 20 members toured Chris Guld’s “home on wheels” and Vivien’s Blue Water Books & Charts –– a store for all things nautical. Vivien had prepared a little quiz for us. The answers for nine of the 10 questions could be found simply by wandering throughout the store. (Quite a clever way of getting us to see
all her merchandise, don’t you think?) The one question that stumped most of us and that could not be found in the store was this: What DVD* does Blue Water Books & Charts sell the most of? You will NOT believe the answer!
1. Captain Ron
2. Finding Nemo
3. Jaws

Vivien got the other retail shops near her to donate prizes. The five people who got the most questions right received a prize. Smarty pants Melissa Rapkin got 8 questions right and selected a pedicure from among the prizes. Other winners were Pam Dearden and Deb McLaughlin. (Sorry I’m not sure who the other two geniuses were!)
Anyway, the food and wine were delicious and the conversation stimulating. Best of all was just being together!
If anyone would like to host a Cannon Circle, please let me know. We have the months of September, February, April, May and June open. Cannon Circles that are already scheduled are as follows:

  • Tuesday, September 27 at Joyce Shore's home; Co-host Suzie King
  • Thursday, October 27, Pam Dearden, Gold Coast Jazz, at Art Serve
  • Wednesday, November 16, Bobbie Stanley’s home
  • Tuesday, December 20, Betsy Grant’s home
  • Wednesday, January 25, Geri Trodick, American Trophy
  • March, Joanne Dee/Ellen Wong, IronStone Bank

See you at the luncheon on the 20th.

WEC Means Business

Pam Dearden, Executive Director
Gold Coast Jazz Society

As the Executive Director of the Gold Coast Jazz Society, I have the delightful job of promoting jazz. A small non-profit organization, our mission is to “perpetuate and advance the cultural art form of jazz through performances, education and outreach activities.” We accomplish this presenting a series of jazz concerts featuring world-class and local jazz artists, providing jazz education to school children, conducting a jazz scholarship competition and hosting a variety of other jazz related activities. As a nonprofit, we rely upon tickets sales, public and private support to exist. Who are our customers? Anyone who enjoys classic jazz! Our jazz concerts are always open to the public and are held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. We have subscriptions or you can buy a single ticket. You can support jazz and our activities by becoming a member of the Jazz Society, by attending our events, or by sending a donation. Our website has lots of information - www.goldcoastjazz.org.

As Executive Director, my job requires a “jack of all trades” with duties that include motivational coach (to motivate and assist our board members to raise money), public relations expert, advertising guru, grant writer, seeker of jazz talent, booking agent (for our resident jazz band), concert production, caterer, and so on. My days are always full and never boring! Working in the arts has been truly fulfilling and I hope that I am helping to keep culture alive for future generations to enjoy. For personal growth (I was trained as a classical musician), I sing in the Master Chorale of South Florida (the former Florida Philharmonic’s chorus) and in my church choir. To help empower others I serve on various committees or Boards of other cultural nonprofits.
Finally, I’ve been married for over 32 years and have a lovely daughter who was just married.

GEM “Greet Eat Meet” Program

Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or what ever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. It is great fun!

The GEM Team has been formed to assist with this program. The committee members are Joann Alderman, Marshia Durham, Christy Lambertus, Gayle Metcalf, and Joni Rosenthal.

Barbara Ryan, having achieved her goal of growing yet another successful business, is putting her bed and breakfast on the market. (See www.goodbreadhouse.com) She thanks all WEC members who visited, and hopes more will come before the sale goes through. Her next venture: starting a magazine in St. Mary’s.

Rene Harrod writes: Dr. Donna Goldstein and I were inducted on August 18, into the Leadership Broward Class of XXIV. I learned about Leadership Broward through one of our monthly luncheons. I applied at least in part because the WEC members who have attended the program spoke so highly of it. Dr. Susie King is one of the Leadership Broward alumni who will be guiding our class through the year.
I'm also on the planning committee for a "Gourmet Gala" being held on Thursday,
October 13 at the Westin Diplomat to benefit an addiction counseling ministry,
Community Christian Counseling ("CCC"). CCC is the only free counseling organization in South Florida serving teens and adults suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. The Gourmet Gala will be a fabulous event featuring twelve of the best restaurants in Broward County, and each guest will be able to sample one or two items from each of these restaurants as well as bid for time shares, dining packages, and more in a silent and live auction. Tickets to the event are available for $75 each, or companies or individuals are welcome to sponsor a table for $750 or be a financial sponsor for larger amounts. More information about the group is available at: www.communitychristiancounseling.org.

Deb McLaughlin went to Navajoland on a mission trip for 8 days over the 4th of July. She was one of 17 people from 5 Southeast Florida Episcopal Churches doing Vacation Bible School and maintenance on the churches at Coal Mine, NM, and Ft. Defiance, AZ, near Gallup. Thank you so much for your support!

Thank you so much Marshia Durham for doing the Newsletter for so long. Thank you
to Chris Guld for her continued help on putting our Newsletter on our website. We
appreciate you both!

Ronnie Karlin writes: If you missed the article on the front page of the Lifestyle
section of Friday, August 19th’s Sun Sentinel, dig your paper out of the recycle bin. Our own Joyce Shore gives away “trade secrets” when editor, Charlyne Varkonyi Schaub, asks “What’s on your coffee table?” The article is accompanied by a picture of Joyce and a list of her credentials. (editor's note: the article can still be seen online here.)

Emily Rushin is traveling half-way round the world to Bhutan in September.
Where? you ask. It is a very small country in the Himalayas, between India and
Tibet/China, just east of Nepal. Closed to tourists for years, Bhutan is now open to a limited number; limited to not adversely affect the 700,000 citizens that make up the native population. She will be going with another intrepid explorer, Marilyn
VanValkenburg, Chris Guld’s mom. Outside of exquisite scenery, fascinating people,
colorful religious festivals, and an opportunity to see a very old culture come tiptoeing into the 21st century, Emily reports that there is not one traffic light in the whole country.
Perfect!
