Program: Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce

Carolyn Michaels will be our guest speaker on Tuesday April 19th. She is the Executive Vice President of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce responsible for coordination of the 3 councils and leadership management within the Chamber. She has worked for 23 years for the Chamber. Carolyn will speak to us about why a business might want to join the Chamber and what the benefits for a WEC member business might be. She will also explain how different Chambers interact with each other such as the Broward Chamber or the National Chamber of Commerce. Carolyn coordinates the Women's Council of the Chamber and will provide information about this group.

President’s Message

Dee MoustakasSpring is definitely just around the corner, which means summer is close behind. UGH! I’m not quite ready to close up the house and turn on the AC, are you?

If you weren’t at our March luncheon, you missed a lively table talk session. A designated facilitator at each table led the discussion about the single-most thing that was holding each of us back from being more successful in our businesses. We pretty much all agreed that there just weren’t enough hours in the day to do everything we needed to do. After 20 minutes, each facilitator stood and summed up the salient points of her table’s discussion.

One table came up with the brilliant idea of committing a Martha Stewart-type crime (nothing serious and no one gets hurt!) so that we could spend five months in prison. That way we could lose weight, catch up on our sleep, read some good books and go home with a handmade poncho. Funny and creative solution, don’t you think?

Emily Rushin’s St. Patrick’s Day Cannon Circle was delightful. She brought a wee bit of Ireland to Fort Lauderdale. Even the rain (which Emily said was so typical of Ireland) couldn’t spoil the turn out. The highlight of the evening (aside from the yummy corned beef and cabbage meal) was singer Mary Jane. MJ, a friend of Emily’s picked her guitar and serenaded us with several Irish and Scottish ballads. It was great fun! Thanks Emily!

We will be voting on the slate of officers for the 2005-06 term at the April luncheon. Hope to see you there.

Dee

P.S. Our social at Brasserie Las Olas was such a big hit (at least 30 members, spouses and friends showed up), we’re going to schedule more of them. Right now, Ronnie Karlin is working on putting together a bash to wrap up the year. This is a chance for friends, spouses and significant others to come together for an evening of camaraderie and FUN! Stay tuned for details.

Slate of Officers:

VP Finance: Dorothy Eisenberg
VP Internal Involvement: Nancy Fischer
VP Community Involvement: Melissa Rapkin
VP Membership: Marilynn Obrig
VP Corporate Records: Cynthia Hardy
Ronnie Karlin is your incoming President as
Dee Moustakas becomes Past President

A Circle of Giving

In October 2003, I volunteered along with Kurt and Edie Hoppe to help at the ARC of the Palm Beaches annual fundraiser. That evening I met the Executive Director of Camp Live Oak (a day camp for kids at Birch State Park). While we were chatting, I told him about our upcoming Gala at the Antique Car Museum in March (2004). He generously donated four weeks of camp (valued at $750) for one child to our Silent Auction.

Fast forward to the event: Friends of mine bid on the camp package with the sole intention of giving it to a deserving child who couldn’t afford to go to camp. They won the bid.

The little boy to whom they gave the gift went to the camp and LOVED it! So much so that the parents started saving so they could send him again this year. In the meantime, the mother was so grateful, she recently sent WEC a check for $150 to express her appreciation and to support our mentor programs.

Talk about a win-win situation! Everyone benefited from many small gestures of kindness.

Dee

Membership Attendance:

The membership requirement is to attend a minimum of five (5) meetings every year in order to maintain regular membership. This is calculated on a fiscal year basis (i.e. August-June, not calendar year).

Future Executive (FX) Mentor Program

WEC’s current participants are:

Tina Debord Raquel Rodriguez

Members, we need your involvement to make our Mentorship Program a success! Thank you in advance to everyone who has already volunteered! We want to know what “gift” you have that you are willing to share with an FX (future executive). Your “gift” may be anything in life – something work related, socially or technically oriented, etc. Would you spend some time with an FX at our WEC functions? Lunch, GEM, Book Club, Cannon Circle, etc.? Ronnie Karlin

Raquel Rodriguez Cunningham: I wanted to give you all an update on my personal development as your FX. As many of you know, Ronnie Karlin has been ever so gracious with her time and has extended herself to me as my mentor. How lucky am I? I wouldn’t be telling the truth if I didn’t point out that Ronnie has been extremely instrumental in keeping me involved in your group. She has made me feel welcome and through her coaching, I know she’s interested in my personal and professional growth.

Ronnie and I share many things in common; we are both in the world of staffing. We chat on a weekly basis, for about an hour, touching on tidbits that influence our business and personal lives. More than having a career in common, Ronnie is an inspiration for success in my personal development. I am so honored to have a mentor willing to lend her ear, she’s a super lady and I’m so thankful to WEC for the opportunity to have her in my life.

I admire you all and I look forward to sharing more about me and getting to know each of you.

Welcome new FX participant Evie Hernandez with Montgomery Mortgage Capital Corporation Real Estate Financing Consultants. Look for more about Evie in next month's newsletter.

Women Empowering Women (WEW)

Our Current WEW participants:
Kim Stiles Patricia A. McCarthy

The interactive activities at our last luncheon were very educational and fun. So many times I go to the luncheon without much to say. This time, I felt “part” of the group and we all had a great time together. I learned a lot too. It is important for me to realize the pressures that await me after school. Most importantly for me, the pressures of work time vs. family time and the pressures of owning one’s own business vs. working for a corporation. It’s great to know that while I work these issues out myself, I have a plethora of experience and information from the members of the WEC to guide me.Patricia McCarthy

WEC Book Club:

In 2002, members of WEC who had a common desire for reading and discussions formed the WEC Book Club. The book for discussion is select by the majority and the gathering is held in a member’s home (munchies are always welcome). The meeting schedule varies according to the book and other circumstances. All members are welcome to participate.

Last month Emily gave the bookies a list of how many books they have read to date and the number is: 17 . . . hard to believe. This group is plain dynamite. Come join them.

The Next Book Club Meeting will be held at the home of Nancy Fischer, 2000 NE 27th Street, Wilton Manors, on Wednesday April 20th. At 6:00 pm. The book is "I am Madame X" by Gioia Diliberto. It is a fiction based on a true painting; story of the woman of the John Singer Sargent's painting. Hope you can all make it.

Cannon Circle

For new members, Cannon Circles are hosted at members’ homes and provide a more informal atmosphere for us to get to know each other. Please contact Leigh Nickel at 954-423-0006 if you would like to host a Cannon Circle.

The Cannon Circle is named for Past President Shirley Cannon who was known for her gracious and uplifting spirit. If you missed Donna Goldstein’s and Deb McLaughlin’s Cannon Circle in January, you missed a lot of fun.

GEM “Greet Eat Meet” Program

Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or what ever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. It is great fun!

The GEM Team has been formed to assist with this program. The committee members are Joann Alderman, Marshia Durham, Christy Lambertus, Gayle Metcalf, and Joni Rosenthal.

High School Mentorship Program

Two years ago, I had the privilege of mentoring two high school students. They each won the $1000 scholarships. I was so very proud of them. We were all crying when they came front and center to receive their awards. Both girls are outstanding women and are doing very well at their colleges.

I have been in continual touch with Kimberly Holker who is in her second year, at Florida University. She is majoring in Marketing. I was so excited when on January 27, I received a handwritten letter from her catching me up on everything that has been happening to her at school. Her description of her studies, sport involvement and social life is magic to my ears. She is a very happy camper. This fills my heart with such joy!

The letter was warm and described her feelings about the bonding that she felt that came out of her experience with WEC and me. I feel so honored that I had a big part in the decision that she made in choosing Marketing as her Major endeavor. The time spent together and the purpose behind it has budded into what we both perceive, as a lifetime friendship.

This is one of the most wonderful gifts that I have ever received. To become a part of a child's life, to have made a difference in that child's life is what heaven is all about to me. I feel at one with Kim and look forward to seeing her when she comes back on her breaks.

Barbara Ryan was recently the recipient of three Addy Awards from the Miami Advertising Federation. The awards were presented for copywriting she did for upscale real estate and spa clients. The Addy Awards are like the Academy Awards of advertising, and Barbara feels very honored to have been recognized for her achievements in the industry.

Barbara Ryan now appears as a columnist in the Jacksonville Times-Union online. Beginning this month, you can view Barbara's column titled appropriately, "Under Barbara's Hat" by visiting www.jacksonville.com, click to First Coast Community, then to Community Columnists. Barbara's columns are a collection of "gentle musings from a Southern steel magnolia." Her first column, "Front porches and Rocking Chairs" explores a plausible homespun remedy for the ills of the worlds.

Emily Rushin has a new knee, but it's not too happy at the moment. Hurts like hell, in fact, but this too shall pass. Tell my friends not to worry about me I'll be mended in a month or so!

Chris Guld, your webmaster: I am celebrating my one year anniversary of living on the road! It was on April 16, 2004 that my husband and I turned the key on our 30 foot motorhome and started the wheels turning. I can't imagine living in a home that doesn't have wheels anymore! We hope to be living this way for many years to come. Right now we are in Las Vegas. My husband, Jim,and I both work for a company called Coach Connect who sets up Wireless Internet in RV Parks. So, it is our job to visit RV Parks! From here we will be heading across Utah and then spending some time in Colorado. We plan to visit Florida sometime during July and August because that is the best scuba diving. I hope to see all my WEC friends then. I keep a travelog on the web (Weblog) where I post stories and photos almost every day. Come visit. www.jimandchris.com

The News Team

A TNT(dynamite) team has been formed to assist with gathering information for the monthly newsletter. The team consists of reporters Patti Archibaud and Amy (Arnold) Van Gent and photographer Joni Rosenthal.

Attention Members! If you haven’t had your picture taken for the directory and the newsletter, please see Joni at the luncheon meeting. She takes great pictures with her little tiny camera.

What doesn’t cost you any money?
What do you have an almost endless supply of?
What can you give away and still keep?
What can change a bad day into a good one?
What makes the giver feel as gppd as the receiver?

A SMILE

So if you want to be happy all day, give away as many smiles as you can!
