August Program: Breaking the Stereotype – Women on Stage

The dynamic and talented Meredith Lasher, the President of the Women's Theatre Project is the guest speaker for our August meeting.
Meredith Lasher and her colleagues at the Women's Theatre Project have a vision to create compelling theatrical experiences that explore the female voice. It is theatre by women, about women, for everyone.

Meredith is an actor, producer, costume designer and arts advocate. She is a founding member and President of The Women’s Theatre Project, where she recently produced and costumed the critically acclaimed Southeastern Premieres of Hold Please, Necessary Targets and the World Premiere of The Anastasia Trials in the Court of Women, which was nominated as Best New York by the Curtain Up Awards. Under her direction, The Women’s Theatre Project received The 2003 Wilks Award for significant contributions to the advancement of women in theatre over the age of 40.
Meredith is the Costume Designer/Theatre Production Coordinator for Miami-Dade College North Campus; she also designs for Mosaic Theatre and City Theatre’s Summer Shorts. Meredith has been nominated for 3 Curtain Up Awards for Best Costume Design at Shores Theatre for Crimes of the Hearth, Bat Boy, and Blood Brothers (for which she won the award). She serves on the Board of Directors of the Theatre League of South Florida and is a member of that organizations Producer’s Forum. Meredith was recently honored by the Carbonell Awards with the Bill Hindman Award for her significant contributions to the development of South Florida Theatre.

President's Message

Welcome back! I hope you thoroughly enjoyed your summer! Kudos to our new board, they are off and running with themes and schemes to make this a fantastic WEC year!

Our Retreat was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who attended – we didn’t just attend – we participated. Thanks for your commitment to continued participation by signing up for committees and Cannon Circles. Didn’t make it to the Retreat? You can still sign up… I’m including a list of the committees below.

Nancy Fischer and committee have been very diligently booking speakers for our upcoming luncheons. Presents the Southeastern Premiere of

IF WE ARE WOMEN
By Joanna McClelland Glass

An intelligent, funny and heartfelt look at the lives and loves of three generations of women.
Directed by Genie Croft
Featuring Kay Brady, Elayne Wilks, Lacy Carter and Jennifer Gomez

On the deck of a beach house two grandmothers, a daughter and the granddaughter gather together. The older women confront their pasts and presents and they are startled into a different reality when the granddaughter dismisses all she’s heard from them. It is an oasis of insight on honesty – lyrical and affecting.

Annual Retreat (workout pages)

This year members gathered at the Red Door Spa at the Galleria Mall in Fort Lauderdale for an evening of fun, pampering, food, and inspiration. We took a tour of the very elegant Elizabeth Arden spa, tasted some delicious crab cakes and other hors d’oeuvres with our wine, chose the spa services we would sample, and munched on salad with shrimp and chicken kebobs.

All of this led up to an intimate meeting for forty-three of us in the Relaxation Room. We talked about a commitment to open communication, participation, and a year full of positive energy and fun. Each of our Vice Presidents was introduced with a short explanation of their board responsibilities; followed by member self-introductions. It was wonderful to see so many new members attend. We all got to know each other a little bit better.

We then separated into eight breakout groups. Members chose the group they would participate in, with a maximum of five in each. The air was clear for us to speak up and we appointed a scribe to take notes for each group. If your ideas didn’t get expressed or you had other concerns, you were encouraged to write them down on the pads provided and drop the notes in a basket. Ronnie promised to read each note.

The topics, board chairs, and breakout group locations were read creating lively discussions with lots of ladies busy scribbling away! After 20 minutes, we all returned to the Relaxation Room to hear the scribes’ summary of the breakout groups’ discussions. Read all about these 'workout sessions' here.

Hard to believe we squeezed all of that in an hour and one-half! We received our Red Door Spa gift bags, scheduled future spa services and said “good night” leaving all relaxed and invigorated!

Women’s Executive Club Networking and the Women Empowering Women Program at Work:

Dr. Donna Goldstein of Development Associates International asked Patricia McCarthy, WEC’s Women Empowering Women beneficiary, to design a full color flyer for an upcoming marketing event. Dr. Donna and Pat collaborated with Jenny Kelly at Ritter’s Printing to quickly produce 1000 digital prints in time for Dr. Donna’s event.
WEC Networking Works! The total turn-around time for designing and printing this project was less then one week!

Women Empowering Women Program, Patricia A. McCarthy:

In August, I start my second year at FAU and I’m hopeful that I will finish all my BFA academic requirements by December 2007. At that time, I plan move on to FAU’s Master of Fine Arts program. It is because of the Women’s Executive Club that my graphic arts education is moving auspiciously forward. In my art as well as my life there is a sense of evolvement, I am starting to feel a sense of professional and emotional maturity. If it were not for Women Empowering Women scholarship and mentoring program, I would not have progressed in this far.
This month I produced a graphic design job for Dr. Donna Goldstein of Development Associates International. I would not have been able to produce this graphic design job if WEC had not purchased me a computer as part of my WEW 2004-2005 scholarship award. WEC’s tremendous help and support is greatly appreciated.

Patricia A. McCarthy

WEC Book Club:

In 2002, members of WEC who had a common desire for reading and discussions formed the WEC Book Club. The book for discussion is select by the majority and the gathering is held in a member’s home (munchies are always welcome). The meeting schedule varies according to the book and other circumstances. All members are welcome to participate.

It's time for new reading fun! Join us Wednesday, August 31 at 6:30 at Deb McLaughlin's home for a lively discussion (always, and often about the book!!!), tasty treats, and luscious libations.

We're reading "The Seashell on the Mountaintop" by Alan Cutler. His animated and energetic prose provides a page-turning thriller of a 17th century scientific discovery in this splendid biography of Nicolau Steno, the founder of geology. Steno was a renowned medical student, very skilled with a scalpel, and discovered the salivary and tear glands. He questioned how a seashell could be on top of a mountain - not in the great flood, but by constant erosion and sedimentation. After publishing this, he abandoned science, converted to Catholicism, and became an ascetic priest and then a bishop. He was beatified in 1988. If that's not a mystery - what could be. I've discovered fossils and looked for rocks my whole life as the daughter of a geologist. So, rock on over - bring a snack to share (I'll have the rocks and drinks!). RSVP to Deb by 8/28. 954-478-1091. Address: 1333 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd. #330 (April Mist), Hallandale, 33009. It's east of I95, past US 1, at the corner of 14th Avenue. There's a few guest places right on that corner, or park next door in the Mott Street Chinese restaurant/Chabad Temple parking lot. My building's entrance is on the Southeast corner facing the 24 Hour Walgreens. My name's on the intercom. Hope to see you!

WEC Means Business

Phyllis Drucker, Director of Consolidated Services for AutoNation, Inc.

Having an incredible job is only the tip of the iceberg of who I am! If I chose one word for who I am, it would be “involved”. If I chose another for what I strive for with others, it would be “empowering”.

Professionally, I run the Customer Service and Support organization for AutoNation. This means providing computer service and support to users in almost 300 dealerships nationally and providing processes and oversight into how our Information Technology executes projects. Our help desk is now taking almost 20,000 customer contacts per month and has completely transformed its reputation in the last year by changing our model of support. Our success is due to a fantastic team, that can boast a very low turnover rate externally, but a high rate of promotions within our team and out to other higher level IT teams within the company. This is due to tremendous mentoring from my management staff, who can take new personnel and train them to deliver a high quality of service as well as help them grow technically. We also have a top notch team providing the services that insure organized and well communicated IT project execution through excellent change management and program management processes.

To continue my own growth, I am President of the IT Service Management Forum South Florida Local Interest Group. We are 1 1/2 years old and have been one of the most successful chapters in the country. This was accomplished by creating a strong team that works together to put together valuable programs for the local IT community.

Over the last 5 years I have been speaking at the national level at Help Desk Institute, Pink Elephant and IT Service Management Forum conferences as well as locally and am currently a Track Chairperson for the IT Service Management Forum's National Conference, responsible for the quality of the presentations for an 8-session track of the conference. I also participated in developing their processes for speaker selection and on their training sub-committee to help insure an awesome conference this year.

Around the word "'empowerment'', I provide coaching and assist with the Team Management Leadership Program of Landmark Education. Through this program I coach people who are leaders in business and in the world, as they learn how to create teams and provide leadership that enable them to achieve any goals they set for themselves. It's out of my commitment to others that I'm committed to working with WEC in the Women Empowering Women and mentoring program area. '

Finally, I'm married and have a wonderful husband and young daughter. We love being together and having fun with friends and family.

I'm excited to join WEC as it gives me access to building relationships with so many wonderful women and look forward to getting to know everyone!

Vice President, Relationship Banker
IronStone Bank

Being a relationship banker in the community for the last 8 years has been a rewarding experience for me! I love to work in an environment that does business the way I like to do business. My values are the basis of how I do business. I am able to focus on the needs of my customers and build strong relationships that last a lifetime.
To expand my knowledge in banking, I carry my series 6, 63 and insurance licenses as well as working on achieving a Certified Financial Planner designation (CFP). Although I do not sell investment products personally, I enjoy being able to help my clients with that knowledge! I thoroughly enjoy what I do for a living and have been told that it shows in the way that I take care of my clients.
I enjoy coaching and developing others and am always looking within my organization, as well as outside to help others whenever possible. I have worked with many younger people over the years to help them when making a decision about their career with opportunities that they may not hear about in school. That was one of the things that really peaked my interest in WEC with the mentoring program.
IronStone Bank is a subsidiary of First Citizens BancShares Inc. (Nasdaq: FCNCA), one of the 100 largest financial holding companies in the United States. BancShares' other major subsidiary is First Citizens Bank, which was established in 1898. First Citizens is headquartered in Raleigh, N.C., and has more than 330 branches throughout North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. IronStone Bank exemplifies the same long-standing principles of strength and tradition that have fueled the success of the First Citizens franchise. At IronStone Bank, our values are, and will always be, the foundation of our relationship with our customers. You can count on us to provide sound financial answers for your personal and business needs – today and tomorrow.
Outside of my career, my husband Boeman and I live in Coconut Creek where we are raising our two boys, Jacob (3 ½) and Camden (2 ½) and eagerly awaiting the arrival of our daughter in November! We spend the majority of our free time with our family and feel very fortunate to be able to do this so we take full advantage of our proximity to them.
Thus far I have enjoyed my introduction into WEC and am really looking forward to learning more about the group as well as the individual women that make up such a super club!

MEMBERS DOING BUSINESS WITH MEMBERS

From Ronnie Karlin
I can’t thank Cynthia Hardy enough for her patience and professionalism. I went to her for contacts for my age related far-sightedness. She didn’t laugh even once as I tripped and bounced off walls once they were in. I’m a tough patient. I opted for a beautiful pair of progressive lens. Again, thanks, Cynthia! She and I spent a Sunday afternoon at the Red Door Spa for a Stress Reliever Treatment. It was awesome! So was the company!

GEM “Greet Eat Meet” Program

Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or what ever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. It is great fun!

The GEM Team has been formed to assist with this program. The committee members are Joann Alderman, Marshia Durham, Christy Lambertus, Gayle Metcalf, and Joni Rosenthal.

From Geri Trodick
My husband and I did a week long dive trip on the Live-aboard dive boat, Nekton. We went to Cay Sal Banks (near the Bahamas). Then we spent a week in Wisconsin (near Wisconsin Rapids) visiting friends. Now our 14 year old grandson is visiting us from California for 3 weeks. While we were gone, our sons finished our move to our Pompano location: 831 West McNab Road, Pompano Beach, 33060. New number 954-782-2250.

From Carolyn Ernest-Jones

I am so sorry that I have not been at any of the meetings. My mother has been pretty sick this year and I have spent 3 months in total over there. I have just got back after 7 weeks there as she died on June 18th and being an only child there was much to do. She was 85 and had a wonderful life – last year was not much fun. 250 people came to her Memorial Service and we had a blast – just what she would have wanted with a party after with practically all of them showing up. Anyway I hope to see you all at the next lunch.
