President’s Message

Dee MoustakasI had the privilege of sitting next to last month’s guest speaker, Carolyn Michaels. She is quite an interesting woman who has led an exciting life. She performed for years in Sheraton’s “Show on Ice”, which I remember seeing several times and has been with the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce for 22 years.

Ronnie Karlin is putting together a fabulous evening for us at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. It’s on Saturday May 21 at 7:30 p.m. and is the last social we’ll be having under my presidency. It is going to be a FUN raiser, not a FUNDraiser. So, bring your significant other, your friends, neighbors, anyone who enjoys having a great time and prepare to eat, dance and play the night away.

There’s going to be a DJ, Italian buffet, complimentary Chianti, costume and dance contests, prizes. Loads of FUN!!!! Please RSVP to Daisy in Ronnie’s office at 305-819-2500 on or before May 16 so we can be sure to have enough of everything.

Please be sure to join us. Those of you who know Ronnie, know she gives the very best parties! See you there!

Members, we need your involvement to make our Mentorship Program a success! Thank you in advance to everyone who has already volunteered! We want to know what “gift” you have that you are willing to share with an FX (future executive). Your “gift” may be anything in life – something work related, socially or technically oriented, etc. Would you spend some time with an FX at our WEC functions? Lunch, GEM, Book Club, Cannon Circle, etc.? Ronnie Karlin

Welcome new FX participant Evie Hernandez with Montgomery Mortgage Capital Corporation Real Estate Financing Consultants. Look for more about Evie in next month's newsletter.

WEC Book Club:

In 2002, members of WEC who had a common desire for reading and discussions formed the WEC Book Club. The book for discussion is select by the majority and the gathering is held in a member’s home (munchies are always welcome). The meeting schedule varies according to the book and other circumstances. All members are welcome to participate.

The Next Book Club meeting is Wednesday, May 25. The book chosen is The Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland, telling the stories of five people who owned a Vermeer painting named in the book's title.
This luminous story begins in the present day, when a professor invites a colleague to his home to see a painting that he has kept secret for decades. The professor swears it is a Vermeer—but why has he hidden this important work for so long? The reasons unfold in a series of events that trace the ownership of the painting back to World War II and Amsterdam, and still further back to the moment of the work's inspiration. As the painting moves through each owner's hands, what was long hidden quietly surfaces, illuminating poignant moments in multiple lives. Vreeland's characters remind us, through their love of this mysterious painting, how beauty transforms and why we reach for it, what lasts and what in our lives is singular and unforgettable.
We will discuss this book and dine on the sumptuous treats brought by the friends who attend on Wednesday, May 25, at the home of Joni Rosenthal. All WEC members are very welcome. Please RSVP to Joni at jlovinly@aol.com.

Cannon Circle

For new members, Cannon Circles are hosted at members’ homes and provide a more informal atmosphere for us to get to know each other. Please contact Leigh Nickel at 954-423-0006 if you would like to host a Cannon Circle.

The Cannon Circle is named for Past President Shirley Cannon who was known for her gracious and uplifting spirit. April’s Cannon Circle was held at the home of Claire Vickery. If you missed it you missed a fun evening! Thank you Claire.

GEM “Greet Eat Meet” Program

Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or what ever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. It is great fun!

The GEM Team has been formed to assist with this program. The committee members are Joann Alderman, Marshia Durham, Christy Lambertus, Gayle Metcalf, and Joni Rosenthal.

The Executive Grapevine: news and notes about WEC members. (send them email by clicking on their name)

Joni Rosenthal, our WEC Photographer never seems to get her picture taken. So here she is with her eight month old Tylar. Joni says that she loves this little man soooooo much! He is so wonderful.

Ellen Wong would like to announcement that they are going to be having another child in November just in time for Thanksgiving...

Ginny Forster and her husband, Paul Costello planned an early April trip to Rome, but had a hard time getting flights due to an impending strike threat by Italy's national airline, Alitalia. As a result, most alterative airline's seats we all filled. Tossing in the towel, they elected to go for an Italian-style cruise instead, on COSTA, out of Port Everglades. The cruise and the ship were were absolutely wonderful, and had they gone to Italy as earlier planned, they would have been there when the entire country was at gridlock, pretty much shut down in mourning over the Pope's death. Some things were simply not meant to be, and for a very good reason.

In April, Ginny Forster was elected 2005-06 President of the Stewardess Alumnae Association (SAA) of South Florida. This organization of 80+ former and current flight attendants is in it's 52nd year and is a social organization which is also involved in charitable endeavors. This year the club sent over 150 "ShoeBoxes" packed full of the 100 top items most missed by soldiers currently deployed in Iraq. Ginny's new position will be effective in September. WEC member Judith Schliefstein is also a member of SAA

MORTGAGES & THE ARTS
What do the two have in common?
Michelle Verlaine

Both are highly rewarding! I have been in the residential mortgage lending industry for more than 13 years. My business can be highly stressful and clients expect top performance. To reward myself, I like to be entertained. The Opera is a classic art form that demands incredible talent from its artists. I attend performances as frequently as possible that are sure to pleasantly remove me from my world, leaving me with goose bumps, tears, happiness and completely fulfilled. Through my attendance and participation, I support the immense talent and preparation that is passionately committed to this art.

As a member of the Leadership Committee of the Florida Grand Opera, I am exposed to a wonderful and highly interesting and professional group of people who share my interests. I get to participate in supporting the young artists who comprise the Opera, spend time celebrating life with the artists at parties and functions surrounding the performances, fabulous dinners and lots of laughter.

If you are interested in Leadership or would just like to attend one of the upcoming performances, please call me. The next performance is A Masked Ball by Guiseppi Verdi featuring Clare Rutter who guarantees a spine-chilling performance. For those interested, I can be reached at 954-394-4741 or go to www.fgo.org.

Marshia Durham brought her daughter Rachele Weber to the April Luncheon.

The News Team

A TNT(dynamite) team has been formed to assist with gathering information for the monthly newsletter. The team consists of reporters Patti Archibaud and Amy (Arnold) Van Gent and photographer Joni Rosenthal.

Attention Members! If you haven’t had your picture taken for the directory and the newsletter, please see Joni at the luncheon meeting. She takes great pictures with her little tiny camera.
