From the Board

As I sit and write this, post-Wilma, it seems like our October Prospective Member Luncheon was half a lifetime ago… What a cause for celebration! You were awesome getting the word out! We had (I think a record) 88 people, about half were guests, many for their second luncheon. Marilynn, Susie and Rene did a great job coordinating efforts to make sure the event was the success it was! Marilynn is going to be busy doing everything she can to convert the qualified women to members. Please help her by continuing to share with your guests all the reasons you have been a devoted member of WEC!

We have an aggressive membership goal – 25 for the year! The Holiday Luncheon (December 12) is an excellent opportunity to invite clients, prospective clients, vendors, and anyone else you do (or hope to do) business with!

Wilma took her toll on the Tower Club. To date, they are not answering phones and so we have not had communication with them. Pat McCarthy, a valued member and catering director of the Westin Hotel is ready to accommodate us for Board Meetings and the November Luncheon. Thanks, Pat! A notice will go out with the menu selection letting you know where we will be.

Wilma has also caused us to reschedule some events. The LUAU is off until after the first of the year. The 5K Walk/Run benefiting PACE is set for December 18th; plenty of time to dust off your sneakers and train to keep in shape through the holidays!

I am very honored that PACE has asked me to host a table(s) for their fundraising luncheon Creating Partnerships on Thursday, December 1, 11:45am – 1pm, at the Westin Hotel.

This is a free lunch for people to come and learn about PACE. You will be asked to consider making a contribution but there is no minimum or maximum gift. It is the job of the PACE Center for Girls to inspire people to want to give. As much as anything, we want people to come and find out what PACE offers. Please contact me immediately if you are interested in attending president@wecftl.com or 305-343-1691.

I have spoken to some of you about this already and I want to thank the following members for committing to attend: Melissa Rapkin, Dee Moustakas, Roberta Stanley, Linda Amorello, Ginny Forester, Rene Harrod and Joyce Shore. Ginny has also offered to speak to the Girls about entering the business world in a male dominated industry (Corporate Real Estate) after a career as a Flight Attendant.

I know some others have committed to taking a tour of the PACE Center. I can’t encourage you strongly enough to do so!

These have been trying times for all of us. Everyday I have attempted to make contact with as many of you as possible. The obvious challenge is the means of communication we’ve become so dependant on are in many cases down. Please, if you know of any member in need of assistance let me know!

Patience and persistence have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish. John Quincy Adams

I am honored to serve as your President.

Keep your calls 305-343-1691 and emails president@wecftl.com coming!!

November Program:Rev. Tita Calzada

Storms are an inevitable part of life. Whether its weather, relationships or careers, when looked at with the right perspective, they serve a divine (or magnificent) purpose. Join us as we explore how to not just survive, but also thrive through the storms in our lives.

Rev. Tita Calzada writes for the Sun Sentinel. Her column offers practical applications of universal principles. Ordained in 1998, she currently serves as Senior Pastor of Unity Church of Fort Lauderdale. She is an inspirational speaker with an exquisite talent to help us make life easier.

Member Profile:Jennifer Kelly writes

Ritter’s Printing is a true family business. Besides my parents, my sister, two brothers and husband all work there. We have been in business since 1988. We all get along, which we attribute to everyone having different skills and interests (I’m in sales).
Our business focuses on 1-4 color printing, black and white and color copying, as well as fulfillment and direct mail. A typical job might be printing 20,000 Qty. Full Color postcards, then addressing and mailing them, or copying 50 Qty. binders with tabs and shipping them to a client. We are your family of Printing Solutions!
We never have the same day twice and we all love what we do!
We will be moving in early December to our 11,000 Sq. Foot location, near McNab and Powerline Road.

Virginia Howard writes: Hi...I was interviewed by channel 10's Katy Corso about dreams and it will be aired some Wednesday afternoon in November...that's all I know for now...I am leaving for South America, ie Rio, Iguazu Falls, Buenos Aires on November 1 thru 14...so if someone catches it, please tape it for me... Nora Weiss and husband, Steve, went to the official Grand Opening of Blue Water Books and Charts on October 22nd with granddaughters Taylor (3) and Megan (5). Everyone had fun browsing through Vivien's beautiful new store while enjoying the hot dogs and lemonade she provided. Both Taylor and Megan were so excited to find two new books to take home and also a pirate's accessory kit for Halloween. We will be sure to come back again, Vivien.

Congratulations Bobbie! Roberta Stanley has been chosen to be recognized as Broward Partnership for the Homeless Table Honoree at the 2005 National Philantrophy Day Luncheon for her hard work as Co-Chair of the Annual breakfast for Champions of the Homeless which raised more than $200,000. The luncheon will be held on Wednesday, November 16 @ 11:30 am at the Broward County Convention Center.

Rene Harrod writes:

Two WEC business connections to report on:
1. My firm purchased several dozen "Oscar" trophies from Geri Trodick at American Trophy for an amateur performance of a murder mystery as a firm-bonding event, and they were very well received -- almost everyone went home with an "Oscar" and loved them.

2. Ellen Wong of IronStone Bank is sponsoring a reception for doctors at a local hospital and arranged for three of my partners from Berger Singerman to present a panel discussion on asset protection issues and how the new bankruptcy reform act effects the doctors' professional and personal financial issues .This is a great collaboration that was born from my connection with Ellen at the WEC.

WEC sets the Pace Center for Girls

The PACE Mission

"PACE provides girls and young women an opportunity for a better future through education, counseling, training and advocacy."

*PACE Center for Girls Broward is an alternative educational and counseling program for at-risk girls ages 7– 17. For many of our girls, PACE is the last hope to avoid a life of conflict, despair and failure and instead embrace a life filled with achievement, dignity, serenity, and grace.
Two Fridays a month, the girls at PACE go “shopping” at the Incentive Store.
For currency they use points earned from completion of class work, good attendance and participation in special projects. Most of the 80 girls at PACE earn a trip to the store on Incentive Friday. In addition, girls with the highest points have their names entered into a special auction. The girls love Incentive Fridays and always know when there are new items on the shelves.

If you would like to make a contribution to the Incentive Store, please contact Kathleen Ryan
