FUNraiser
Please mark your calendars now for our planned WEC Spanish Funraiser
evening to be held on Saturday April 29th.
WEC members are encouraged to bring spouses and friends. Remember
this is a FUN raiser not a Fundraiser.
Our
event will take place at the Bahia Mar Hotel at the Ft Lauderdale
Beach. The festivities will begin at 7pm at the side of the hotel
pool which overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway from the second floor
level.
You will be entertained by a live Spanish Guitar Player. We may
also have flamenco dancers to entertain us, but failing that be sure
to
wear your best dancing shoes so that you can practice your own
version of Flamenco.
Guests will be greeted with glasses of delicious Spanish Sherry or
Sangria or red and white wine. Soft drinks will also be available.
You will dine on a wide array of Spanish tapas (appetizers) and
wonderful olives. Paella will be served as our entree.
A cash bar will be available throughout the evening.
The ticket price is $60 per person.
Please make out your checks to WEC and mail them to:
Vivien Godfrey

President's Message
The money we collect for dues (currently $225./year) is the only revenue
we have for operating the club (unless we have a FUNraiser where we
can collect enough money to exceed the costs of location, food, etc.
for the event). We also hold FUNDraisers to support community outreach
(such as the scholarship fund, FX and WEW programs). But dues are not
for lunches. Lunches are one of the expenses that dues cover and with
rising food costs, menu choices are somewhat limited. WE NEED YOUR
HELP!!
Each month, we end up paying for lunches that nobody eats; money that
could go towards events, socials, etc. PLEASE BE SURE TO CALL IN YOUR
CANCELLATIONS 48 HOURS PRIOR TO THE LUNCHEON. If you reserved for a
guest, let them know that the lunch costs $25 and discuss who will
be paying. If you invited a guest and she won’t be coming, please
make sure the guest is taken off the list, as well. We don’t
always know who invited which guest.
We have 4 or more no-shows a month. Those unrealized dollars add up
quickly. Each member will get one “emergency” or “last
minute no-show” after that you will be charged $25. for you or
your guests no-showing. I know you understand. We discussed this at
the retreat and you agreed we need to run our club in a fiscally responsible
manner. I welcome any comments or concerns president@wecftl.com.
Thanks!!

Here's my photo getting one of the awards.

Emily Rushin's abstract painting has won Third Place (cash and ribbon)
in Hollywood Art Guild's recent exhibit. She doesn't think it is one
of her best paintings but says she thinks it struck a chord with the
judge: the title is "Category One Not." Emily painted it the
afternoon of Hurricane Wilma in her trashed living room.

This is Dee and "Dr.Donna" and Larry Robinson after his one
man African American Heroes show at Artserve. We run the show all year
long!

Joni Rosenthal writes:
The evening was wonderful! The play was extraordinary mainly due to
the
exquiste use of words. I was glued to the characters and found the entire
story delicious and different.
There were only a few WEC women present: Dr. Donna, Emily Rushin, Joni
Rosenthal and Dee Moustakas
As always, MERIDITH LASHER, Founder and President was a most gracious
Hostess. They had a lovely spread: little pin wheel sandwiches, cheese
and
crackers, fruit and cookies and of course wine and soft drinks. If I
had
not eaten dinner, I could have had a hearty meal.
I feel sad that more people did not take advantage of sharing this superb
evening. This group of talented actors are some-ones to watch. They are
going places . . . and quickly.

Chris Guld (our webmaster)
is currently out West and has a blog with some gorgeous photos. Her latest
adventures were in Big Bend National
Park, Texas. Click here to

back in time for the next luncheon.

Rejection. Rejection is not easy to accept or understand. But the hardest
part of rejection is not allowing it to affect one’s self-esteem.
I recently entered two pieces of art in the FAU art show, and, poor-poor
me, both were rejected. This won’t get me down. I’ll keep
on trying, entering art shows around Broward. You may wonder why I’m
interested in exhibiting. There’s really no money to be made. Outside
of school, there is usually a fee to enter an art show and very few purchases
are ever made at these art shows … so, it actually cost me money
to show my art. So why do I feel the need to exhibit my art? I believe
that artists, including myself NEED to create art. Now, I’m not
talking about the occupation of art where a client, for a fee, gives
an artist an assignment. I’m talking about the art an artist creates
out of NEED to create it. Images that are not so pretty or easily accepted,
images that you wouldn’t want to hang in your living room. But
the artist must create and the artist must exhibit. And so such rejection
won’t get me down or make me stop creating.
On a lighter note, here is a digital image I created for my Computers
in Design class. Although aesthetically pleasing, it is also not so pretty
or easily accepted.
Book Club
I don't know where to begin to share one of the highlights of
my life. This highlight is our BOOK CLUB founded by seven members on
November
17, 2003. Twenty-four books later have brought me absolute joy.
How can 24 books bring a person JOY? The people that I share the books
with are one of the main reasons that I look forward to each meeting
that occurs about every six weeks. We take turns having the book club
at each others houses. Everyone brings something to eat and we always
end up having a banquet.
With a glass of wine in hand or other beverage of choice, the faciliator
for evening prepares questions about each book and what usually happens
is that we discuss almost every topic known to God. Okay, I am exaggerating
but not much.
We have gotten to know each other quite well and what is so wonderful
is that we have bonded like sisters. When something happens to one of
us, it happens to us all. Thus, with the passing of our Nancy Fischer's
Mom, we are there to support and uplift her. This club is so special.
Most of us feel that if there were no more WEC that the Book Club would
always be there for us.
The group is not large at the moment. We have between five and 10 people
coming depending upon the schedule of each person. Most times, we end
up with six people. What ever happens, it works!
So, dear hearts, come join an opportunity of a life time. We do not
want you to miss this experience. Oh, it sometimes happens that one of
us have not gotten to read the book. We come anyway and do not comment
about the situation. I have on occasion not finished a book. I go to
the Book Club anyway. No matter, I have always gotten something to take
home from this evening. I am usually smiling when I go out someone's
door.
In parting, please join us as soon as possible. Even if you don't wish
to read ferociously, come and get a hug.
With love as always,
JONI
WEC Book Club is Wednesday, April 26, at 6:30, at Deb McLaughlin's home,
1333 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd. #330, Hallandale, 33009 - Come out, share
a snack, enjoy delicious libations and discuss our choice for Spring,
The Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman. The imaginative New York Times best-selling
author creates a mythology for a modern age - complete with dark prophecy,
family dysfunction, mystical deceptions, and killer birds set in Deb's
favorite area - New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado - home of ancient cliff-dwellers
and ancient ones. "A warm, funny, immensely eneraining story about
the impossibility of putting up with your relations - especially if they
happen to be gods." - Susanna Clarke

I hired Jenny Kelly at Ritter's Printing to put together a mailing list
for me. Because of how automated her shop is, she was able to also print
my cover letters, insert my brochures, stuff my envelopes, stamp and
mail them. She was able to save me quite a bit of time and money. I have
used Ritter's Printing many times and I have never been disappointed.
Their quality and professionalism are second to none.

Patti
Archibaud is a 2-year WEC member.
Patti moved to south Florida and fell in love with the tropical setting,
warm weather, the ocean and has lived here for more than 30 years.
She was an Area Manager with BellSouth Telecommunication, Inc. and
managed
the operation of the Small Business Division. Her position required
the managerial skills to run the internal operation and the talent
to represent
BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc. in the community. She enjoyed a
successful career with BellSouth for 30 years.
After her first career she took a year from work and enjoyed planning
her daughter’s wedding. Having the time to travel and do all the
fun events involved in the planning of a wedding was a gift. After a
year it was time to get back to work so she began a career in real estate.
Patti had gotten her real estate license while still working at BellSouth
Tele. Currently a realtor at RE/MAX Partners she is helping people to
make their dreams come true by assisting them to find or sell a home.
Her new career offers the opportunity to meet and work with a wide range
of interesting people.
Cannon Circle
Tuesday, 4/25/2006
Subject: Cannon Circle hosted by Suzie King & Joyce Shore
Location: TBA
Our February Cannon Circle was hosted by Barbara
Moorman after
hours in her store. Carroll’s Jewelers was the ideal setting for Kevin
Lane, an expert on all things Egyptian, to tell us about the clothes,
jewelry and powerful women of ancient Egypt. The fact that he tied
his presentation to the timely topic of King Tut made it all the more
pertinent.
Of course, we all oohed and ahhed over the collection of Egyptian jewelry
and artifacts that Barbara’s son Luke had on display. Everyone
who had seen the Tut exhibit felt even more enlightened and those who
hadn’t gone yet left with new-found knowledge and a higher level
of anticipation.
Thanks Barbara for hosting and arranging such a delightful presentation.
