From the President

Fellow WEC members, I am honored to be your 2006-07 President. Welcome back to a year of stimulating speakers and exciting events. It will be hard to follow such a great 2005-06 led by our Past President Ronnie Karlin but I believe that our new Board is ready to do a great job.

First a big thank you to everyone who attended our Annual Retreat held at the Lauderdale Yacht Club. We brainstormed around many different topics to generate ideas for the different WEC committees. Several different committees are now forming so please review the list of Board members shown at the end of this newsletter and if there is something that you are interested in joining please contact the appropriate Board Member.

This year I have asked that our speakers include in their luncheon presentations their thoughts on what makes them passionate about their work. I believe personally that one of the great differences between women and men in the workplace is that women bring passion to what they do. Women’s work is always more than just a job. The most successful women that I know are truly passionate about what they do. So don’t miss the first speaker of the year Florida Representative Ellyn Bogdanoff. She will speak on Tuesday August 15th about her work in the Florida House and of course what makes her really passionate!

Several members asked me if we would be continuing our monthly lunches at the Tower Club or returning to the Riverside Hotel. After looking carefully at both options I decided that we should remain at the Tower Club. We have booked the lunch dates for the entire 2006-07 year that you can see further in this newsletter. Booking all the dates early will ensure that we will always be in the larger meeting room at the Tower Club. Parking will continue to be difficult until the repairs to the ramp are completed later this year. One other thing to remember is that our luncheon begins at 12 noon and ends at 1.30pm. Several members seemed to think that our luncheons end at 1pm and I wanted to clarify this point.

I am very excited to be your President for the coming year. Please feel free to contact me at anytime with your questions or suggestions. You can reach me by email at vgodfrey@bluewaterweb.com or by telephone 954-763-6533 x245. Because I travel often for my work if the matter is urgent it is best to leave me a phone message and not an email. I cannot always respond to email as quickly as a phone call.

Along with the interesting stories that we share concerning our own lives, our stories that are brought about with every book that we have read so far, we will be discussing our choice for this month:
The Mermaid Chair,  by the author of “The Secret Life of Bees”, Sue Monk Kidd.

This is a story about a 42-two year old woman, Jessica Sullivan who is in the so called mid-life crisis. This book seems to shout about some of us who are in this passage of our lives. We get to play along with Jessica and see how she copes with her life of passion, misunderstanding, and love twinkled with erotic notions of the old approach to living. The author is an outstanding story teller. This is the kind of book that you can’t put down.  It is a stick to it, until completed state of affairs.

Come join this group of witty and funny people. Bring a dish for 8 to 10 people that you create or purchase. Don’t be concerned about anything because we have found that we always seem to end up having a banquet of food along with great amity.

Can anyone ask for anything more!
