Why A Prospective Member Luncheon in March?

We’ve always held our Prospective Member luncheons in October. But because it’s so close to our new year starting and the holidays, the timing poses several challenges. First, it’s difficult for the Membership Chair to get the event organized, invitations printed and guests invited. Second, it’s hard to get the prospects to fulfill their second lunch requirement (as stated in our bylaws) because of the holidays. Consequently, the application process tends to drag on and we lose wonderful candidates.

Marilynn Obrig, our VP Membership, suggested moving the Prospective Member Luncheon to March, and the board agreed. To get everyone accustomed to the change, we decided to introduce the idea this year by hosting a second luncheon for prospective members this March. (This way we don’t lose precious time to hurricanes either!)

Please put on your thinking caps and invite those women whom you think would benefit from joining WEC, and vice versa.

SAVE THE DATE – April FunRaiser

Please mark your calendars now for our planned WEC Spanish Funraiser
evening to be held on Saturday April 29th.

WEC members are encouraged to bring spouses and friends. Remember
this is a FUN raiser not a Fundraiser.

Our event will take place at the Bahia Mar Hotel at the Ft Lauderdale
Beach. The festivities will begin at 7pm at the side of the hotel
pool which overlooks the Intra Coastal Waterway from the second floor level.

You will be entertained by a live Spanish Guitar Player. We may also
have flamenco dancers to entertain us, but failing that be sure to
wear your best dancing shoes so that you can practice your own
version of Flamenco.

Guests will be greeted with glasses of delicious Spanish Sherry or
Sangria or red and white wine. Soft drinks will also be available.
You will dine on a wide array of Spanish tapas (appetizers) and
wonderful olives. Paella will be served as our entree.

A cash bar will be available throughout the evening.

The ticket price is $60 per person.

Please make out your checks to WEC and mail them to:
Vivien Godfrey
805, Cordova Road
Fort Lauderdale FL 33316

You may also make your reservation by email to vgodfrey@bluewaterweb.com

JANUARY’S CANNON CIRCLE

Geri Trodick hosted January’s Cannon Circle at her business, American Trophy. Geri’s son, Steve, gave us a tour, explained how different items were made and demonstrated new laser engraving equipment. Son, Sean, showed us how glasses are etched with sand (very carefully!).

The company, which has been in existence for more than 30 years, has come a long way from just providing plastic trophies to soccer kids. They now provide everything from plaques and one-of-a-kind recognition awards to advertising specialties and T-shirts. New member Deborah Wiggin got to see her name badge being made (and it isn’t as easy as you might think).

The Cubanito sandwiches were delicious as were the wine and creampuffs. Thanks Geri, it was great fun and most informative!

From the Board

March is Women’s History Month
I thought this might be an appropriate time to share the following:

One Flaw In Women
By the time the Lord made woman,
He was into his sixth day of working overtime.
An angel appeared and said,
" Why are you spending so much time on this one?"
And the Lord answered, "Have you seen my spec sheet on her?
She has to be completely washable, but not plastic,
have over 200 movable parts, all replaceable
and able to run on diet coke and leftovers,
have a lap that can hold four children at one time,
have a kiss that can cure anything from a scraped knee to a broken heart
-and she will do everything
with only two hands."

The angel was astounded at the requirements.
" Only two hands!? No way!
And that's just on the standard model?
That's too much work for one day.
Wait until tomorrow to finish."

But I won't," the Lord protested.
" I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart.
She already heals herself when she is sick
AND can work 18 hour days."

The angel moved closer and touched the woman.
" But you have made her so soft, Lord."

"She is soft," the Lord agreed,
" but I have also made her tough.
You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish."

"Will she be able to think?” asked the angel.

The Lord replied,
" Not only will she be able to think,
she will be able to reason and negotiate.”

The angel then noticed something,
and reaching out, touched the woman's cheek.
" Oops, it looks like you have a leak in this model.
I told you that you were trying to put too much into this one."

"That's not a leak,"
the Lord corrected,
" that's a tear!"
" What's the tear for?" the angel asked.

The Lord said, "The tear is her way of expressing her joy,
her sorrow, her pain, her disappointment, her love,
her loneliness, her grief and her pride."
The angel was impressed.
" You are a genius, Lord.
You thought of everything!
Woman is truly amazing."

And she is!
Women have strengths that amaze men.
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness,
love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy
and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
They stand up to injustice.
They don't take "no" for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have..
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel
and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about
a birth or a wedding.
Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They grieve at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss
can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you
to show how much they care about you.
The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.
They bring joy, hope and love.
They have compassion and ideals.
They give moral support to their family and friends.
Women have vital things to say and everything to give.

HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,
IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

This was submitted to me by Tina DeBord (previously an FX). She knew I’d want to share it with you. Ronnie president@wecftl.com

MEMBER PROFILE

Geri Trodick has been a member of WEC since 1987 and has served on the board in several positions.
She was in Leadership Broward Class XIV.

She has lived in Florida for over 35 years, moving from Southern California with her family. In 1972 she and her husband started their trophy business. Their business has changed over the years. It started out with mainly trophies, and has expanded into corporate awards. They specialize in custom awards – such as acrylic, plaques and glass, and also do name badges, interior signs, ribbons, and laminated plaques. They also provide a complete line of advertising specialties, such as pens, hat, t-shirts, and anything a customer might put their name on (like the mirrors they gave out at their open house).

Three years ago her husband retired and their two sons took over. Steve is in charge of sales and Sean is in charge of production. Their oldest son, Scot, who lives in California is in charge of creating and maintaining their website. Check it out – AmericanTrophy.net.

Last July they moved their State Road 7 location to their location in Pompano Beach. It is a more central location and it is much more efficient to be in one location.

Her husband (of 43 years) and her have 5 grandsons and one granddaughter. They enjoy scuba diving and also kayak diving. Her husband dives year round and catches lobsters. Geri dives when it is warmer.

Athena Ransom writes:

I did not make the luncheon as I had a scheduled day with the enlisted Navy boys from the USS BATAAN, they brought there bikes on the harrier craft this trip and unloaded them here. I was tour guide for the day for 15 of them. I took them on a 2 hour ride up A1A and then to Bru's Room in Deerfield for a buffet lunch I set up. They were so appreciative as no one ever takes the time to do stuff like that for them. The local Navy League has asked me to become a member for the good deed I did. That is cool... But the best part is that they all took autographed pictures back with us to the ship and I and my kids got a private tour of the ship. They also played my DVD of the speed Tv show on shipwide TV, 500 TV's. I will keep you updated

GEM Lunches

Here's another opportunity to sign up for GEM lunches! I hear rumors that some members feel lonesome as they haven't been invited to a GEM luncheon in a while. Stop sniffling and let Emily Rushin add you to her list! If you'd like to be a hostess, step right up and volunteer, too. E-mail Emily at wisemily@bellsouth.net

For new members or those that might not have participated before, GEM stands for Greet, Eat, Meet. A volunteer hostess e-mails or calls the four members sent to her by the co-ordinator (Emily at present), and suggests a time and place to meet for lunch - or breakfast, or even cocktails. It's a good idea to have a "Plan B" - an alternative.

It's a great opportunity to get to know each other better and learn about each other's businesses, too.

The Executive Grapevine: news and notes about WEC members. (send them email by clicking on their name)

Condolences to Carol Jones. Her father passed away at the age of 89 last week. Her Dad had been in poor health for the last year.

Speedy Recovery for Marsha Linville. She had total joint replacement surgery on her right hip on Wednesday, February 15th. She’ll be in the hospital for 12 days and out of circulation for another six weeks. Twenty five years of ballet and distance running has wore out the cartilage in both her hips.

Ginny Forster writes:
My husband and I ran away for a lovely Valentine's Day escape to Santa Barbara CA, where we would like to retire immediately following our lottery win! Wish us luck!

Emily Rushin's Mission: Make sure that far destinations are where geographers say they are. This time, Emily is headed to the Mediterranean to see the total solar eclipse on March 29 from a cruise ship off the coast of Turkey. The Costa Fortuna leaves from Savona, Italy, and visits Libya, Crete and Greece in addition to being in location for the eclipse. Emily is teaming up with Marilyn VanValkenburg, Chris Guld's mom, again, and her friend Gypsy Graves will be on board with most of her children and grandchildren. After the cruise Emily will spend a week on the Italian Riviera visiting and painting Cinque Terra before a quick stop in Paris then heading home. Bon Voyage, Emily!

Book Club

The next book is funny and sunny! Jimmy Buffet's "A Salty Piece of Land" starts off with a cowboy on the run because he doesn't fit in with the new ranch owner, who wants to raise poodles instead of cattle. He rides his horse Mr. Twain to New Orleans and puts horse on a shrimp boat headed to Central America. It's one outrageous tale after another! Great characters, like Tex Sex and Ix Nay, a Mayan shaman and fly fisherman. Ladies, how can you not come to Joni Rosenthal's March 16 to "discuss" (read LOL)? Just let her know you're coming and bring some food to share.
