From 1983 until 1993 she worked at WPLG as a medical reporter
and midday anchor. Diana moved on to become a correspondent for CBS News based in Miami. In her 28 years as a broadcast journalist in South Florida, she has received awards from N.A.T.A.S., The American Heart Association, Planned Parenthood, The Institute of Food Technologists, and The Wellness Community.

From the President

Everyone who attended the September lunch heard our speaker Barbara Stein speak about her passion for theatre and in particular her passion for musicals. She and her husband co-founded Actor’s Playhouse Productions 18 years ago. She spoke about the challenges of fundraising and restoring a historic building in Coral Gables. She also described with great enthusiasm the upcoming productions in their 2006-07 season. At the end of her talk, Barbara told us that she would donate 4 tickets to WEC members to attend a performance and also invited us to consider a group outing to the theatre. Pam Dearden our VP Events is going to look at this for our group and Pam will also announce the winners of the tickets at our next lunch.

In addition we had a Business Showcase for the Around Town newspaper presented by Kim Styles-Pascia and Kevin Lane. Kim who is one of our WEW scholarship recipients is now working for Around Town. Kevin Lane is the Society and Fashion Editor for Around Town. For those of you who missed the lunch you can read more about the newspaper in Kim’s article below or visit the Around Town website www.aroundtownnews.com Kim brought a wonderful basket of gifts for a prize drawing which was won by Carla Albano. In addition Around Town has offered a free quarter page ad to a WEC member company. The winner of the ad will be announced at our next lunch.

A big thank you to Geri Trodick for bringing our new and redesigned name badges to the September lunches. The new badges have magnetic clips which makes them easy to wear. They also now feature the words “Member since XXXX” This allows you to see at a glance if your are chatting with a newby or a member of long standing. Thank you Geri for bringing our new badges.

In addition to the many members and guests who attended the September lunch, we had 6 young ladies from PACE along with 3 PACE staff members. One of the PACE attendees helped to create the thank you picture that we presented to our speaker. Please remember that you can bring items for the PACE program to any lunch or Cannon Circle. Melissa Rapkin has included a reminder list below of the kind of items that you might bring for PACE.

Also in September we had a great Tahitian theme Cannon Circle  co-hosted by Patti Archibaud and Vanessa Koutalidis. Details of that event and the next Cannon Circle are below.

In October we look forward to welcoming our speaker Diana Gonzalez the health reporter for NBC6/WTVJ and to visiting the Regent Bank for our Cannon Circle.
I look forward to seeing all of you at our October events. Thanks, Vivien

Business Spotlight

Kim Stiles-Pascia and Kevin Lane of Around Town NewspapersThank-you for the opportunity to spotlight our business, Around Town Newspaper, at last month’s luncheon. I was thrilled to have Kevin Lane as a guest and a co-speaker. He has a great sense of humor doesn’t he? He was extremely impressed with our club and the “good works” we do. For those of you who were unable to attend the last luncheon meeting, I am including the short version of what our business is all about.
Patrick Mascola, owner and publisher of Around Town, has an extensive background in the hospitality industry, South Florida, and the publishing business. Prior to opening Around Town (over 25 years ago), Mr. Mascola worked for the Sun-Tattler. He is well known for promoting and contributing to various charitable causes.

Around Town is unique in the newspaper industry because Mr. Mascola still independently owns it. This gives him the freedom to be very creative in promoting our clients. For instance, we can put together a special pullout section for just about any sector of business-everything from health and beauty to real estate and home services. When you advertise with us you get a lot more ‘bang for your buck’ because of the publicity we give your business. In our paper you, our customer, and your customers are the focus of our business. As many of you know we write about your special events and charity affairs in our society section. Our paper contains articles about your latest techniques for teeth cleaning, cutting hair, doing nails, and eye surgery. We also write about the latest fads in fashion, cars, fine wines, automobiles and real estate.

The Around Town reader is a customer whose purse strings are open for everything
consumable. They are investors, they travel, they take cruises, stay at resorts, attend Theatres, art museums and concerts. They eat out often and like to be entertained. They appreciate good food and superior wines served with finesse in pleasant surroundings.

Around Town is circulated in over 400 locations including: hotels, resorts, private
clubs, beachside condominiums (110 buildings), restaurants, and Ft. Lauderdale /
Hollywood Airport International. The newspaper can also be found in scores of busy
intersections in their attractive white metal racks.

Mr. Mascola is allowing me to give WEC members a 10% discount on any ad through
the month of October. I would be glad to answer any questions. Thanks again for your support and attention.

Virginia HowardI have just returned from a cruise of the Greek Isles:  Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes, and Santorini...the Aegean is breath-takingly blue and the cycladic architecture is so lovely...we also went to Istanbul for a day to see the Grand Bazaar and I must confess I did buy a Turkish rug that is a turquoise floral and will be delivered in 4 to 6 weeks...and we did go to Ephesus, which is like Pompei and very interesting...I climbed the Acropolis without my running shoes as my luggage was still in Madrid;  the Acropolis was lit up at night under a full moon and I hope my photos will capture this magical sight...I saw an huge exhibit of Botero in Athens plus paintings of the Abu Ghraib prison which were painful to see...then to Madrid, which is so clean and full of trees, to see some art: the Prado with Goya and Velasquez, the Sofia Reina to see Picasso's Guernica and lots of his works and Miro's...but the highlight of Madrid was the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum with more contemporary paintings of impressionists, expressionists, modernists, surrealists and pop art, all in chronological order in a modern building painted in dark peach inside with an outdoor cafe with a rose garden...I had to buy another piece of luggage to carry the art books and souvenirs...I really liked the men in Madrid who were true gentlemen and could probably live there...my next trip in March is to Bangkok and Vietnam, pending the politics of course...I had invested 5 sessions with a personal trainer before I left for endurance training and that was very helpful and I will continue.

Deb McLaughlinDeb McLaughlin's son, Jonathan Rodgers, is a REAL Game Boy now.   He got his Dream Job - across the Bay from San Francisco with HumaNature Studios, coding and developing video games for $45K a year, plus royalties on the games he works on - even moving expenses!  Guess that specialized degree from Full Sail in Orlando paid off!  Great foreshadowing with his Mom-made Halloween costume when he was 8!

Book Club

The WEC Book Club is going down the Yellow Brick Road and reading Wicked, The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire this month.  Join us for a witchy evening Monday, October 30th, at Deb McLaughlin’s lair at 6:30pm.
If you like to read, and feel you have no time – this is just the book for you.  The basis for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, it’s “a glorious frolic, a feast of language, a study of good and evil, and a massive history of the fabulous land of OZ.”   The LA Times states “ A staggering feat of wordcraft, Maguire has created one of the great heroines in fantasy literature.” “Save a place on the shelf between Alice and The Hobbit – that spot is well deserved.” – Kirkus Reviews.
Bring a spooky snack to share – Deb will have the witch’s brew bubbling.  (and wine and soft drinks, too!), 1333 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd. #330, Hallandale.  RSVP to 954-478-1091 or dmclaughlin@wmxj.com

New Member Profile: Carla Albano

Carla AlbanoAfter a decade, Florida has become home for my husband George Cann and I.  While we have little family nearby, we have created a surrogate family through our business, Alternative Home Health Care.   We started our business ten years ago, and now have over 300 employees between our Ft. Lauderdale and Miami Offices.  Our company provides in-home care to the elderly.   Our employees are very important to us; we provide them health benefits and 401(k) benefits which is unusual for our industry.  Our strategy has always been to provide W2 employees which affords the highest level of protection for our clients.  It is customary in our industry to use Independent Contractors who are not insured at all.   We also donate a substantial number of hours of service each year to the needy in our community.

Once in awhile I dust off my law license and perform some pro-bono legal work, mostly for needly elderly in Broward County.  In 2007 it is my goal to begin volunteering for one of the immigration law projects.  I am active in several local charities including Caresource, and Jewish Family Services.

In our off time my husband and I enjoy golf and tennis, and travel.    We have no children, but are really good aunts and uncles.  I recently endowed a scholarship in my husbands name at Miami University of Ohio, his alma mater.  This was in honor of a milestone birthday!  The scholarship is for veterans who are sophomores or higher, who fulfilled their college dream by completing military service.   Long ago, my husband was such a student.

Family Central to Host 7th Annual Charity Golf Tournament,

Brochure and Registration form

Family CentralNorth Lauderdale, FL (August 25, 2006) – Family Central, Inc. is excitedly preparing for our 7th Annual Charity Golf Tournament to be held on Friday, October 13, 2006, at the beautiful Palm Aire Country Club & Resort. This tournament has become one of our most successful fundraisers and the silent auction, held during the Awards Luncheon, is almost as popular as the game!

Our last tournament raised $16,000 that helped feed nearly 3,000 needy families during Thanksgiving and put holiday toys into the arms of close to 40,000 of South Florida’s forgotten children. This year, we are hoping to double the amount of dollars raised and hope to feed 3,500 families and provide Holiday Toys for nearly 50,000 disadvantaged children.

Family Central is the largest not-for-profit family support organization in the State of Florida, offering specialized services and programs to help give children a competitive start in life.  Our programs are directed primarily toward economically disadvantaged families living in the South Florida area.
