From
the President
In April we had a busy and well attended lunch. In addition to many members and guests, we welcomed 6 students from the PACE Center for Girls. Lori Parrish, the Broward County Property Appraiser as our speaker. Lori spoke about how she became involved in public service and answered many questions about her work. We presented a picture drawn by one of our PACE attendees as a gift to Lori.
Also at the April lunch the membership voted on the candidates for our 2007-2008 Board. The candidates were elected unanimously and will take office on July 1st with Melissa Rapkin as our new President.
We celebrated the anniversaries of membership for members who have belonged to WEC for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years. Pins were presented to those members with anniversaries who were present at the lunch.
25 years Christy Lambertus and Emily Rushin
20 years Joni Rosenthal and Bobbie Stanley
15 years Jan Herard, Pat McCarthy and Edie Hoppe
10 years Marshia Durham, Jackie Powell, Barbara Weinstein and Deb McLaughlin
5 years Ronnie Karlin and Vivien Godfrey
Nacy Fisher hosted a very popular Cannon Circle at her home in April. Lots of members attended and had a great time. Thank you very much Nancy.
A huge thank you to Pamela Dearden our VP Events, who arranged a fabulous French themed evening event for WEC members on April 27th. The group met at Coco’s restaurant in the Harbor Shops plaza. After cocktails and appetizers we travelled by trolley to the home of Marilynn Obrig for our delicious entrées and then to my home for our desserts (including a delectable chocolate fountain courtesy of Melissa Rapkin). Everyone had a wonderful evening!
We have several activities for you to attend in May. First on Tuesday May 15th we will have our monthly luncheon at the Tower Club. Our speaker Mary Harris will talk about various aspects of business etiquette including cell phone and email etiquette. On Wednesday May 23rd Ellen Wong will host a Cannon Circle at her office at Ironstone Bank. The Book Club will meet at Joni Rosenthal’s on June 14th. More details about all of these events can be found below.
I look forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming activities. Thanks, Vivien

BYLAWS
This year's board has proposed several changes to WEC's bylaws. It is customary for the membership at large to vote to accept (or not accept) these changes at the annual meeting, which is also our June luncheon. The following outline is a summary of the proposed changes. If you have any questions before the vote, please contact any member of the board.
Proposed Changes to WEC Bylaws 2007-2008
- A paying guest may attend luncheons no more than four times per year.
- Strike the retreat from the description of the VP of Events (as falling in the domain of the President Elect), as it does not otherwise appear in the bylaws.
- The Immediate Past President shall remain as a signer on bank accounts for her one year tenure.
- Include in the Officers section of the Bylaws, under Immediate Past President, the statement: “She shall also be responsible for active membership retention.”
- Strike the position for an FX member on the board.
You may view the proposed changes in their context of the complete bylaws by clicking here.

The
Executive Grapevine: news and notes about WEC members.
Our own "Dr.Donna " (Donna Goldstein) has been invited to serve as a Cultural Ambassador to Haiti, where she will be assisting numerous female owned and run arts collectives. We wish her a safe and productive trip and can't wait to hear about her trip and see what wonderful creations she may bring back!

Book Club
The next BOOK CLUB takes place on Thursday, JUNE 14, at 6:30 PM. The fun, laughter and heady interaction between "BOOKIES" begins at Joni Rosenthal's home where we shall be reading THE ROAD by Cormac McCarthy. He is best known for his novel, ALL THE PRETTY HORSES.
"This book could be considered a dark book that glows with the intensity of the author's huge gift of language." Placed, in a post-apocalytic world where all matter of wildlife is extinct and utter darkness prevails, comes a final affirmation of hope in the novels closing pages. This makes the book all the more enduring because a boy takes all of his father's rage at the hopeless folly of man and lays it down, lifting up, in its place, the oldest of all things: LOVE AND FAITH.
THE ROAD'S most compelling, moving and eloquent description of survival in a hostile world, is the bond throughout the book between Father and Son.
The author's tale of survival in a world gone bleak and mad is the miracle of goodness that brings hope where there is none, in a dying world. This is a MUST read. " It begs to be discussed. So many nuances, so many allegories, and so many scenes that are reminiscent, but still new."

For those who have not been to Joni's home, please choose LAS OLAS BLVD, heading EAST toward the OCEAN. When you see the CITCO GAS STATION, take a RIGHT. You will be on SUNSET DRIVE.
Ahead of you is a two toned pink building with a circular driveway. Try and park on the street. If not, JAMES, our doorman will park your car.

April Cannon Circle
Hi Everyone!
If you have not had a chance to host a Cannon Circle, I encourage you to do so. I had so much fun planning my Cannon Circle in April. The food was bought and the house cleaned and then the fun really began when the guests arrived. Our women in our club are the best! I had about 20 ladies come to my home and we sat and drank, ate and talked, talked and then talked. What a blast! This is a perfect way to get to know one another better. I know we all had fun, but I really must say that I got so much out of it and feel closer to some many of you now. Thanks for coming and sharing my home.
Nancy Fischer

Thirty WEC members, spouses and friends enjoyed being a Francophile for an evening on Friday, April 27 at the Parisian Nights Progressive Dinner. The evening began with cocktails and appetizers at Coco’s Bistro on 17th Street Causeway. Next, everyone hopped the Sun Trolley to be whisked away for a dinner of Boeuf Bourguignon and Coq Au Vin with accompaniments and French wines at the lovely waterfront location of Obrig’s Bistro Café (better known as the home of Marilynn Obrig.) After a fabulous dinner catered by Delcaseas, we were again transported via the Trolley to Vivien’s Pâtissière located at the home of Vivien Godfrey. At Vivien’s, everyone enjoyed a fabulous variety dessert wine, coffee, cheese, fruits and a wonderful chocolate fountain.
Many thanks to Marilynn and Vivien for being such gracious hostesses, to Patti Archibaud for helping to organize the event, Liz Mendel for the French travel information, to Pam’s husband Ralph, for assisting with the caterer and to everyone who attended to make this a wonderful evening of fun, food and friends.

The Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day PACE Event on Saturday, March 17, 2007 was a grand success with superb entertainment, decorations, and dinner menu. We had a total of 175 guests, including Melissa Rapkin (and hubby Alan Berns), Pam Dearden, Barbara Moorman, Cynthia Hardy and Ronnie Karlin (with escort David Parker). Melissa and Ronnie proudly accepted the Community Partnership Award which is currently on display at The Tower Club. Dr. Donna Goldstein and Deb McLaughlin were part of the event committee. We raised over $90,000 net profit. A great time was had by all!
