From the President

Vivien GodfreyIn the month of May the members of WEC enjoyed our regular monthly luncheon, a Canon Circle and a meeting of the book club. Our luncheon speaker was Mary Harris who spoke about various aspects of business etiquette including cell phone and email etiquette. We had a lively discussion about how to best conduct an interview or business meeting over a meal. The conclusion was to focus on the business purpose of the meeting and to eat very little! We presented a gift created by one of our PACE attendees as a gift to Mary to thank her for being our speaker.

Also at the May lunch we continued to celebrate the anniversaries of membership for members who have belonged to WEC for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years. Emily Rushin received her pin celebrating her 25 years of membership. Congratulations Emily from everyone.

As required by the By-Laws of our Club the proposed budget for the 2007 – 2008 year was presented to the membership at the May luncheon. This budget will be voted upon at the Annual Meeting which will be our June luncheon on Tuesday June 19th.

Ellen Wong hosted a Cannon Circle at her office at Ironstone Bank in May. Everyone who attended had the opportunity to tour the bank building and admire the wide selection of paintings and antique maps that are on display.Thank you very much Ellen.

We have lots of activities for you to attend in June. First on Saturday June 9th we will gather at Flamingo Gardens for our Annual retreat. On Tuesday June 19th we will have our monthly luncheon at the Tower Club. Our speaker will be Ron McGill of the Miami Metro Zoo who we expect to bring a friend with him. The Book Club will meet on Thursday June 21st at the home of Joni Rosenthal.  Carla Albano will host a Cannon Circle at her home on Wednesday June 27th. More details about all of these events can be found below.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming activities. Thanks, Vivien

BYLAWS

This year's board has proposed several changes to WEC's bylaws. It is customary for the membership at large to vote to accept (or not accept) these changes at the annual meeting, which is also our June luncheon. The following outline is a summary of the proposed changes.  If you have any questions before the vote, please contact any member of the board.
Proposed Changes to WEC Bylaws 2007-2008

  • A paying guest may attend luncheons no more than four times per year.
  • Strike the retreat from the description of the VP of Events (as falling in the domain of the President Elect), as it does not otherwise appear in the bylaws.
  • The Immediate Past President shall remain as a signer on bank accounts for her one year tenure.
  • Include in the Officers section of the Bylaws, under Immediate Past President, the statement:  “She shall also be responsible for active membership retention.”
  • Strike the position for an FX member on the board.

You may view the proposed changes in their context of the complete bylaws by clicking here.

Members Doing Business with Members

Chris Guld's (WEC's webmaster) neck is feeling better, and Dr. Vanessa Koutalidis' business 'Island City Chiropractic' is getting a new website! Isn't that what it's all about?

WEC Website Training

WEC's website is a 2-part affair. There's the public website at www.wecftl.com and there's the 'Members Only' site that requires you to login to see our membership directory among other things. We're constantly changing and upgrading. I'll bet there's some information and capabilities in the website that you don't know! So, while I'm still in town, we're arranging a training session.

We especially want all board members to attend this training, but all members are welcome. I (Chris Guld, your webmaster) live in my motorhome at an RV park on Oakland Park Blvd. just west of I-95. We have a club house that will work just fine for our meeting room. I will have an Internet connection and computer projection equipment so I can show you, live, what it's all about. We will also have a brainstorming session on what you *want* to see on your website.

  • Date: Thursday, June 14
  • Time: 6pm - 7:30/8
  • Location: Paradise Island RV Park, 2121 NW 29 Ct.
  • RSVP: Please let me know if you're coming! webmaster@wecftl.com (954) 551-9142

I will have some refreshments - wine, cheese and crackers.

Book Club

The next BOOK CLUB takes place on Thursday, JUNE 21, at 6:30 PM.  The fun, laughter and heady interaction between "BOOKIES" begins at Joni Rosenthal's home where we shall be reading THE ROAD by Cormac McCarthy.  He is best known for his novel, ALL THE PRETTY HORSES.

"This book could be considered a dark book that glows with the intensity of the author's huge gift of language."  Placed, in a post-apocalytic world where all matter of wildlife is extinct and utter darkness prevails, comes a final affirmation of hope in the novels closing pages.  This makes the book all the more enduring because a boy takes all of his father's rage at the hopeless folly of man and lays it down, lifting up, in its place, the oldest of all things: LOVE AND FAITH.

THE ROAD'S most compelling, moving and eloquent description of survival in a hostile world, is the bond throughout the book between Father and Son.

The author's tale of survival in a world gone bleak and mad is the miracle of goodness that brings hope where there is none, in a dying world.  This is a MUST read. " It begs to be discussed.  So many nuances, so many allegories, and so many scenes that are reminiscent, but still new."

PACE

Connie ChaneyConnie Chaney writes to us:
Well, I have good news.  As I had indicated to Melissa a few weeks ago I approached my social sorority group about Pace as the new group we would raise money for.  We have raised money for 5 years for Broward Children’s Center and were looking for a new charity, this is a 2 year commitment.  A number of the girls gave their pitch for 8 different charities - all very good - and then we voted.  Pace won and so beginning in September our fundraising efforts for the next 2 years, monies will go to Pace.  I hope that Kathleen and one or 2 of the girls will come to one of the socials held at one of the homes to tell more about the organization.  There are approximately 40 girls and so at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, we will adopt a girl each to donate gift and items to, and also usually have a dinner/auction to raise funds.

We could also do this in conjunction with WEC for the dinner/auction.

I am hoping we will do a great job in raising funds for these terrific girls!
