From the President

Vivien GodfreyOur first luncheon of the year was a great success. We introduced three new members: Maggie Smith, Diane Hickey and Mayor Beth Flansbaum-Talibisco.  Four of our board members, Vanessa Koutalidis, Kim Serra-Rivera, Jenny Kelly and Vivien Godfrey spoke about their roles on the board and their need for committee members.

Our speakers were three of our own financial experts: Leigh Nickel, Christy Lambertus and Rose Gershon. They spoke about the importance of gaining and keeping your wealth. They were very knowledgeable and generous with their information. Everyone in the room walked away with terrific information.

Our annual retreat was held on Saturday, August 25th, at Flamingo Gardens. We had a lovely morning and learned a lot more (including some secrets) about each other. We held a trivia contest and found out that Geri Trodick, Christy Lambertus, Emily Rushin and Vanessa Koutalidis know more about most every subject than the rest of us. They walked away with Publix gift cards.

Unfortunately, it rained on our parade, and we were unable to take a tour of the Gardens. We received rain checks and will be returning later in the year. At that time, all WEC members and their families are welcome to join us.

We have an excellent marketing opportunity. Currently, our membership list is not available to the public. If you would like to make your information available to anyone who visits our website, you may for a cost of $25. After you send Kim Serra-Rivera your check, Chris Guld will e-mail you a template which will allow you to enter information about you and your business, including your logo. Chris will then create a public directory.

The Cannon Circles are quickly filling up. We do have Showcases available. These are great ways for other members to learn more about your business and get to know you better. I know that after I had a Showcase, I received additional business. After Rose Gershon held hers, I invested in her identity theft protection and restoration plan. I feel safer because of it. If you’re interested in hosting a Cannon Circle or having a Showcase, please contact Vivien Godfrey.

Please always remember that you can bring comments, concerns and ideas to any Board member. All suggestions are welcome.

We have scheduled a wine tasting at The Best Cellar in Wilton Manors for Tuesday, October 9th. Seats are limited, so RSVP to Pam Dearden.

Don’t miss our September luncheon on Wednesday the 19th. Our speaker will be Capt. Jan Jordan from the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department. In this day of crime, she will teach us how to stay safe.

Members Doing Business with Members

Past president Vivien Godfrey shares another successful experience of members doing business with a member. “I have recently had the opportunity to use the services of Barbara Moorman's business, Carroll's Jewelers. My mother died in January, leaving all of her jewelry to me. While I knew that some of the pieces might have some value there were quite a few items that I really had no idea if they were of value. I called Barbara and she suggested that I bring the jewelry to the store and that her husband Bob would value them for me. I wanted to know not only the value of the pieces but also more about their history and what exactly some of the stones are. Bob is an expert in this field and he has done a wonderful job for me.”

Theora Braccialarghe, Sr. Consultant and Actuary at Gabriel, Roeder, Smith & Co. is moving with her business to a new location. Her firm provides actuarial and consulting services, as well as total plan administration for retirement plans for corporations, cities, and churches. Theora’s prestigious firm handles massive amounts of clients and paperwork. Two of our very own WEC members are helping to ‘ease the pain’ of moving. First, Melissa Rapkin provides a practical solution to the overwhelming problem of storing thousands and thousands of paper files. It started a few years ago when Theora hired Melissa’s company, Documents2Disc, to transfer 1000’s of participant cards onto discs. According to Theora, “This venture was so successful we have retained Melissa to transfer our retiree cards onto discs and to provide off-site storage for our paper files. Melissa is someone we can really trust!” In addition to Melissa’s help, Theora called on Joyce Shore’s Interior Design to help make the most of her new surroundings. “Joyce has allowed me to get on with my business as she bartered for the perfect work stations, furniture purchases and design ideas that are so time consuming. Again I felt as though I had someone on my side telling me what’s good for me, not what I want to hear.” Thanks
Melissa and Joyce!

Our club members should be benefiting from each other, in our business lives as well as personal lives. Please share your business experiences with other members by contacting kastiles43@hotmail.com.

The Executive Grapevine: news and notes about WEC members.

About the Annual Retreat:

Joni RosenthalJoni Rosenthal included a quick note along with the beautiful pictures taken at the retreat.  She writes, “Dear Ones, Although it was a wet day, It was a day to play and share with fellow members. We do know so little about many of our gals and this was a wonderful opportunity to share. I loved it, but I also missed brainstorming ideas for WEC. I think hearing input from all our members is always fun too. Melissa all the effort and thought you put into the Retreat was superb. Your presidency is going to be a creative and loving situation. I look forward to it all.”  A big Thanks to Joni for all the wonderful pictures she provides for our photo album.

Chris GuldChris Guld our traveling webmaster sent this message after receiving Joni’s pictures of the retreat. “Great Pics! Wish I could have been there. I’m in a park just east of San Diego right now.  It’s sunny and beautiful!” We are happy for you Chris and appreciate all the hard work you put into producing our web site and newsletter, and most recently organizing our photo album.

Kim StilesKim Stiles –Pascia writes,”I am very happy to be home after horrendous flights to and from upstate, NY. The weather was beautiful 70’s in the day and 50’s at night. We had a family reunion for my mother’s side of the family. The oldest attendee was great-great-great Aunt Betty who is 91 and the youngest was my sister’s 3 month old grandson, Max. About sixty family members attended and a good time was had by all. My family is famous for our food and hospitality. My grandfather owned one of the first hotels in upstate NY in the early 1900’s. The recipe from Carla’s Cannon Circle was a big hit so we are using this opportunity to start a recipe section. The recipe below was provided by my sister Shelley whose crab dip was the hit of the party.

Hot, easy, crab dip

1 pound jumbo lump crabmeat, free of shells (imitation work too!)
1 cup grated pepper jack cheese
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
1/4 cup green onions, minced, optional
5 to 6 roasted garlic cloves or 2 cloves minced
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons fresh lemon or lime juice
1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
Salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
Combine all of the ingredients in a casserole and gently stir until thoroughly mixed. Bake for 40 minutes. Serve hot with crackers or toast points.

WEW (Women Empowering Women)

Pat McCarthyOur current WEW recipient, Patricia McCarthy, sends us this wonderful testimony: The WEW program continues to help me in so many ways. As the recipient of the program, I have been invited on behalf of the WEC members to attend so many great functions and events. Before the summer I had an opportunity to meet two great artists, Edward Povey and DL Tolar and attend their art show and lecture. This was thanks to WEC member Jan Bullard. This was a rewarding event, since I am obtaining my Bachelors degrees in the interdisciplinary arts from Florida Atlantic University and hope to go on for my Masters. In addition to special events, I also try to attend some of the WEC monthly functions for socializing and networking. At a recent Cannon Circle at Carla Albano’s beachfront apartment, I was able to discuss my ideas for becoming an art appraiser and I received a great amount of professional advice and direction. Advice and directions are always available from the women at the club. Our recent retreat at Flamingo Gardens was wonderful and also a great opportunity  to get to know everyone at WEC; I talked a little about school and business, while relaxing the day away. The WEC is a great place to discover all the possibilities my education will bring.  Many Thanks, Patricia A. McCarthy

PACE

Tara Horner of the Tower Club recently sent out a special membership invitation to WEC members. She has graciously offered us a reduction in initial fee from $2000 to $200. What makes this offer really special is that $100 of the initial fee will be paid directly to the Tower Club and remaining $100 will be paid directly to Pace Center for Girls Broward as a donation from the member personally-how great is that!!!!

Remember this is back to school month so please don’t forget to donate supplies for our Pace girls. If anyone would like to take a tour of the facilities please contact, Kathleen Ryan.
