Program Speaker

Peg McPhersonMargaret McPherson,

Vice President
THE EVERGLADES FOUNDATION
As the Vice President of The Everglades Foundation, “Peg” works with Foundation staff conducting and sponsoring scientific research and analysis on Everglades’s restoration; forming community and business coalitions; and, monitoring state and federal government environmental policies. The
Foundation is the only national organization dedicated specifically to Everglades Restoration and provides more than $2 million in grants and contributions to most of the
mainstream environmental organizations committed to sustaining the historic River of Grass—from Audubon to World Wildlife Fund.

Prior to working for the Foundation, Peg was with the South Florida Water Management District working on Everglades issues; and was the Public Affairs Coordinator for the Suwannee River Water Management District in rural, North Florida.

Peg has worked for—or with—just about every environmental and cultural agency in the state from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Department to the Florida Department of State. She has lived all over Florida, from South Beach to High Springs. She is a graduate of Florida State University and a graduate student at Florida Atlantic University. Peg serves as a Board Member on the Smart Growth Partnership and the Leadership Broward Foundation. She was also appointed to serve on the Broward County Historical Commission.

From the President

Vivien GodfreyWe had a lovely luncheon in September, when Captain Jan Jordan from the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department spoke to us about safety. We were reminded of the obvious – don’t leave your purse in plain view in the car, lock your doors and use your burglar alarm. We were also informed on items that may be new to some of us, such as how the police are arming themselves against “today’s” criminals and how important it is to dial 911 – even if we’re not sure it’s an emergency.

We also heard from our newest member, realtor Carol Metevier, and presented Deb McLaughlin with her 10-year membership pin. We learned more about the duties of three of our board members: Ronnie Karlin, Vice President of Community Involvement; Pam Dearden, Vice President of Events; and Jan Bullard, Vice President of Membership. If you would like to help them, please get involved and join a committee.

Don’t miss the October 16th luncheon, when we’ll hear from Peg McPherson from The Everglades Foundation. Did you know that 68 threatened or endangered species call the Everglades home? The Everglades Foundation works to ensure that the environmental needs of the ecosystem don’t get left behind in the rush to develop Florida.

Kim Serra-Rivera, branch manager from Regent Bank, will be showcasing her business at the October luncheon to teach us more about her bank.

Dr. Vanessa Koutalidis held a terrific Cannon Circle on September 25th. We toured her office, got massages, ate terrific food and played a game of “If” to get to know everyone better. Our next Cannon Circle will be October 25th, hosted by Pam Dearden and Margarethe Sorensen.

We will hold a wine tasting on October 9th at the Best Cellar in Wilton Manors. Guests (including spouses) are welcome. Space is limited, so please RSVP to Pam Dearden.

As you know, it rained during the Retreat and we were unable to tour Flamingo Gardens. We will be returning November 3rd. All members and guests (including children) are welcome to join us. Everyone who paid for the Retreat will receive free admission and tram tour. The cost to all others is $12.50.

Want to get more exposure for your business? We have many marketing opportunities: Cannon Circles, Showcases and the new Member Directory. If you would like to have your information on the WEC website available to the public – and potential customers – just send $25 to Kim Serra-Rivera. Chris Guld will then e-mail a template for you to fill out, and your company’s information, web link and logo will be accessible to the public. If you’d like to have a Cannon Circle or Showcase (dates are going fast), contact Vivien Godfrey.

Members of WEC understand its value. Membership allows you to attend all lunches, Cannon Circles and the Book Club. Most importantly, you gain almost 80 instant friends. Because of rising costs and the desire to promote membership, we are raising guest fees to $30 per lunch. If you have guests that have attended two lunches, please encourage them to apply for membership. There is a link from the website home page to download an application.

Thank-you,
Melissa Rapkin

Jenny Kelly reports that her company, Ritter’s Printing recently hired Dee Moustakas of Kodiak Communications to develop text for a post card campaign to promote their company. According to Jenny, not only does Dee have a “way with words,” she is quick and efficient. “We were extremely happy with Dee’s work and look forward to working with her in the future.”

“Ritter’s Printing has handled all aspects of the printing for my company, Legacy Training, since its inception,” says Kim Stiles. “Ritter’s Printing is especially supportive of small businesses. Jenny is always extremely helpful and getting training workbooks printed for a class next week, is just a phone call away!”

Our club members should be benefiting from each other, in our business lives as well as personal lives. Please share your business experiences with other members by contributing to the newsletter.

Autumn means apples! I have been craving this quick easy apple dip even though it sure doesn’t feel like Fall, so I called my nanny and got the recipe. The minute I tasted it, I was filled with childhood memories of cool crisp days, leafs changing and football games. This caramel flavored dip is a healthy snack. Be creative and add, nuts, chocolate or even strawberry flavored cream cheese. Have fun and enjoy!

1 (8oz) package of cream cheese
             ½ cup brown sugar
             1-tablespoon vanilla extract

Stir together the cream cheese, brown sugar, and vanilla extract until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
