Holiday Luncheon and Gift Exchange

December 14th at the Lauderdale Yacht Club
Please bring a $15-$20 gift to exchange plus a gift for our PACE girls.   See the Gift For Girls Flyer below in Community News - PACE needs all donations by December 14th.
And, “Dr. Donna” of World Arts Now is delighted to announce that Anthony Corrado will perform at our luncheon.  Anthony is one of South Florida’s most versatile musicians and plays everything from smooth jazz to flamenco, today’s pop  to classical, standards and oldies, and of course our favorite holiday tunes, on three types of  sax, flute, trumpet and guitar.

From the President

President, Melissa RapkinWe had a great meeting in November. I learned from our speaker, Justin Moss, that the Florida Grand Opera will be performing an "adult" show this season. Knowing nothing about opera, I was surprised to learn that there was such a thing. You never know what you will learn at a WEC meeting.

We will hold our annual holiday luncheon on Friday, December 14th. We will keep many of our traditions that have made this a don't-miss event. Our luncheon will take place at the lovely Lauderdale Yacht Club. Music will be provided by Dr. Donna's World Arts Now. All members and guests are asked to bring an unwrapped gift for PACE. There is a list of requests later in the newsletter. Please also bring a wrapped gift to pass, valued between $15 and $20. If you've never participated in our famous gift exchange, you're in for a treat. Speaking of treats, check out the great menu. Anyone looking away may find themselves without cake. (I suggest you follow Susie King's motto -- eat dessert first!)

We had a lovely Cannon Circle on November 28, hosted by Bobbi Stanley and Toby Manke at the office of Brinkley, Morgan, Solomon, Tatum, Stanley, Lunny & Crosby. What a beautiful office with a great view! Bobbi and Toby were great hostesses who served terrific food and wine.

Don't miss the next Cannon Circle at the Party Girl's (Betsy Grant) house, on Thursday, December 20th. She always goes above and beyond making everyone feel special, decorating her home and cooking outrageous food.

We had a rain date (to make up for the retreat) at Flamingo Gardens on November 3rd. We couldn't have asked for better weather. Emily Rushin took some great photos of the flowers and animals. If you haven’t been to Flamingo Gardens, there’s nothing like it in Broward County. It’s a great place to learn about the history of South Florida.

PACE will be holding their annual Believing in Girls Society Luncheon on Friday, December 7th. You’ll learn what PACE does, why the girls depend on it, and why WEC got involved with PACE. If you would like to join us, please contact Ronnie Karlin (and don’t forget the tissues).

Chris Guld, our traveling webmaster, is working hard on our new member yellow pages. For the first time, your information can be available to the public. Check it out at WEC yellowpages. This is a great marketing tool for the low price of $25 per year. If you are interested in an ad, please send a check to Kim Serra-Rivera and Chris will send you a template to fill out.

On behalf of the WEC board, I would like to wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season and a prosperous New Year.

Thank-you,
Melissa Rapkin

GEM- Great, Eat and Meet

There's just not enough time at the monthly luncheon to get to know more WEC members, to talk about your business or what's been happening in your life lately.  Well, WEC has several solutions!  There are at least three solutions, in fact, open to just members: Cannon Circles, Book Club, and GEMs.  Cannon Circles happen about once a month in a member's home or place of business, Book Club meets about every six weeks at a member's home, and GEMs take place about every two months for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or cocktails at a restaurant.

GEMs are small groups in which a hostess e-mails suggestions for a date, and the time and place to meet.  Members reply with the best date for them; the hostess announces the choice; 3 to 6 members find time to meet and talk and eat and talk!  Everyone pays for her own lunch and a great time is had by all.

The tables are scrambled each time and you will receive an e-mail from Emily Rushin announcing your table-mates.  Please be courteous to your table hostess: reply promptly, let her know if you can come, and call or e-mail her if something comes up and you have to cancel - we know that happens sometimes.

You are welcome to e-mail Emily at wisemily@bellsouth.net if you want to be on the GEM list, or if you want to opt out.  New members are added automatically, but they can opt out if their lives are so hectic they can't take time out - but that would be a shame, as these small groups are IDEAL for making new friends and sharing your business information too.

Ronnie Karlin would like to thank the following people for presenting candidates for the WEW program:

Pace for Girls

PACE for Girls

to the Girls at PACE Broward

PACE Center for Girls is an educational and counseling day program for girls at-risk ages 8 to 17.  PACE provides girls and young women an opportunity for a better future through education, counseling, training and advocacy.

To brighten the holidays, each of the 80 girls at PACE Broward receives a special gift, a large shopping bag filled with presents.  For many of the girls at PACE, these gift bags are the highlight of their holidays and the only gifts they may receive. Please help us keep the tradition going by donating items from the list below.

Deadline for “Gifts for Girls” donations is December 14, 2007.  For more information or to make arrangements to drop off gifts, contact Kathleen Ryan at 954-561-6939 ext. 317

HIGHER POWER
A Sunday school teacher said to her children, " We have been learning how powerful kings and queens were in Bible times. But, there is a higher power. Can anybody tell me what it is?" One child blurted out, "Aces!"    (Out of the mouths of babes!)
