September Luncheon

Date: Tuesday, September, 2003
Time: 11:30 Networking
12:00 Luncheon Program

Program: We're Going Swimming......

Swimming in the pool of our very own resources!

Rather than having a speaker for the September meeting, the program spotlight will be on US!

WEC members are very talented, very knowledgeable, very creative women. So we decided it's time to share this wealth of talent, knowledge and creativity with one another. The way we're going to do this is through lively conversation on specific topics of general interest at the individual tables. There will be a facilitator at each table to make sure the conversation stays on point and everyone has a chance to participate.

This is an opportunity to get to know one another better, expand your resource base, pick up some very useful ideas that may make a significant difference in your business and your life, and have fun in the process.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Luncheon Info:
The Riverside Hotel
620 East Las Olas Blvd
Fort Lauderdale

Cost: $20. Members are responsible for
all guest lunches

Menu: Oriental chicken breast salad tossed with spinach,
water chestnuts, mandarin oranges and mushrooms.
Carrot cake for dessert

OR Alternate Menu:
Fresh grilled vegetables and Roma Tomatoes
with garlic basil sauce over Pasta.

RSVP to:
Toby Manke by September 10th at 954-522-2200 or tsm@brinkleymcnerney.com

From the Boardroom

I am honored to serve on your board for a third year! Wow, has the time passed quickly! I hope everybody had a wonderful summer and is looking forward to the WEC luncheons, Cannon Circles and actively participating in our extraordinary club.

Women Empowering Women is in full swing this year, with Ann Meacham looking for another candidate for us to support. We are thoroughly convinced that referrals from you are our best prospects. Look what a success story Kim has been! She came to us through Jan Nelson.

Mary Minnet is responsible for Public Relations, she’ll be “getting the word out” about all our “goings on”. Mary and I have met and she is looking for new venues for us to be seen.

The mentoring committee (present were Dee Moustakas, Dora Vilk-Shapiro, Drazia Rubenstein, Charlene Bender, Deb McLaughlin, Cynthia Harding, Cindy Poulos, Emily Rushin) had our first meeting last month and we have begun to formulate ideas for our proposed changes to the program. This year, our commitment is to identify who we are going to mentor, begin to build relationships with the source of those mentors (as we previously did with the BRACE Advisors), establish the processes and support materials for the program and roll out a pilot with at least one mentee.

Focusing on our primary objective, MENTORING - “giving back” by using our collective experiences to guide and advise younger women with executive potential, we believe we may also derive the following benefits:

  • Generating additional club sponsorship from the business community
  • Creating greater visibility in the community for WEC
  • Enabling members to expose business services to larger base of people
  • Encouraging younger women to become members, and
  • Perpetuating growth and longevity of the club

I encourage anyone who wants to have a direct impact on the program, to contact me (rkarlin@globalresourcepartners.com) and I will get you involved!

In addition, We Mean Business initiatives will continue this year – join us September 16th for a special Round Table session during lunch…
Remember, life is not a spectator sport – be a participant!

Membership News

I just wanted to take an opportunity to welcome two new members who joined Women's Executive Club recently - Korie Kapal and Dr Rosa Lawson. Please introduce yourselves to them at the luncheons and make them feel welcome.

Members are reminded as per the by-laws, that to retain active status each year every member must attend a minimum requirement of 5 luncheons per year wherever possible. Member attendance will be printed occasionally in the newsletter.

In October we will be having our annual WEC Membership Luncheon. This is always a great opportunity to introduce guests and friends to Women's Executive Club. We are looking forward to making this a very special event. We will be giving each member 5 invitations to send out to guests. The invitations will be available at the September luncheon. Please be thinking about whom you would like to invite. Envelopes will be mailed out to those unable to attend the luncheon.

I would like to take the opportunity of thanking the Membership Committee
for their help.

The Executive Grapevine

Emily Rushin writes, “I saw the most wonderful film this weekend and I want to recommend it to all my WEC buddies. Please don't miss it. WHALE RIDER It takes place in New Zealand and it's about a young girl who doesn't fit
the profile of "leader." But she certainly IS. Fair warning: take a handkerchief.

WEC member’s prayers go out to Shana Munden as her husband is battling lung cancer. On a happier note, she landed the most expensive home north of Broward Blvd. that sold for $8,950,000 in Bay Colony 14,000 sq. ft.

Patty Camp's commute to work in Kendall everyday has now been shortened to Pembroke Pines where her company just purchased a diagnostic center whose name and location is: Diagnostic Testing Group, 10001 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines, Florida 33024, Phone: (954) 443-8010, Fax: (954) 443-8081

They currently perform MRI, MRA and Ultrasound and will soon perform CT and Nuclear Medicine such as Thallium Stress Tests and Bone Scans. Patty says, stop in and say Hi if you are in the neighborhood!

Geri Trodick writes: “Our Grandson, Kristian, spent 6 weeks with us. He is almost 13 and lives in California. He got certified for Scuba Diving and is doing just great.”

Lisa Lee hosted a fashion presentation at her home on August 19th. It was “resort casual” style clothing from the Weekenders and yes, presented by Carolyn Ernest-Jones.

Marshia Durham writes “If you haven’t seen MenopauseThe Musical you are missing something.” It is a hilarious celebration of women and the change! It is currently playing at the 26th Street Theatre in Wilton Manors. 954 344-7765

Chris Guld and Geri Trodick are taking a trip with their husbands and several other folks from their Kayuba dive club. They will be spending the week of 9/6 - 9/13 on board the Nekton dive boat, scuba diving several times a day as the boat steers it's way to an island called Cay Lobos which is about 10 miles off the coast of Cuba. Hasta la Vista girls!!

Mentorship Program

Joni Rosenthal and Kimberly Holker

The news that I would like to share along with a photo was my "Goodbye" luncheon that I shared with my Mentee, Kimberly Holker. We met for lunch right after our WEC luncheon. I took her for a bite as her send off to college. Most of all, to share all that is before her and then some.

Kim could only spend an hour with me as she had so much to do to get ready to leave for the University of Florida on Saturday, August 16th. She was so excited. Her parents were following her in their car. Her younger brother, 14 yrs old, was going to drive with Kim and all of her stuff in her car.

It is so exciting to begin a new life; the essence being four years of college. The pure wonderment of Kim's new life begins with opportunity. When taken with joy, the ideas bring a mind set that states that we can do ANYTHING that we set our minds to doing! Thus, I truly believe that Kimberly will shine brightly among all the new stars which will be in the Freshman Classes this Fall.

What I found so amazing about this young woman is that she worked at her job as a waitress the night before she left for college. Needing every bit of money for college that she could have, she chose to give "it" the extra ten yards so that she could have a week's pay check.

I am so fortunate to have had two of the nicest and smartest girls of my lifetime of mentoring. I have been privileged to be a part of their graduation ceremonies, not by being there but in essence being a part through their vivid descriptions and their total desire for me to share in their triumphs..

The most exciting thing that happened for me out of Mentoring program is that Kimberly shared that she will be majoring in Public Relations and said that I had a lot to do with this choice. WOW!

Danit Zanin, my other gal is leaving for Emerson College in two weeks. This college is located in Boston, a terrific area to spend ones college life. This was my hot spot and I adored every moment of my college career. I will see her before she leaves.

I am excited about the idea of following these gals through college and hopefully the rest of their lives. This Mentoring for me has been a privilege. My girls are just extraordinary. I feel SO blessed.

WEC BOOK CLUB:

The next Book Club meeting will be held at Jan Herard's home on Sept. 23, 2003 at 6:30 PM.

The Book Club attendees chose The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown for their next discussion. Amazon.com's Editorial Review is as follows:

With The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown masterfully concocts an intelligent and lucid thriller that marries the gusto of an international murder mystery with a collection of fascinating esoteria culled from 2,000 years of Western history.

All members of WEC are invited to read this book and attend our discussion. Everyone brings something for a "pot luck dinner" and Jan will provide the Spirits!

At the WEC monthly luncheon two business cards are drawn for members to write something about themselves.

We Mean Business: Spotlight on Dee Moustakas

Business: Kodiak Communications

Editor … proofreader … storyteller … wordsmith … writer.
A few choice words. All of which you could say apply to me. When I started Kodiak Communications, Inc. in 1991, I provided many of the services of an advertising agency –– graphic design, copywriting, art direction and print supervision. However, when my physical limitations prevented me from providing the level of service my clients deserved, I decided to regroup and turn my attention to “words.”
Today, I provide proofing services to large corporations such as Arby’s Restaurant Group, Baptist Health Systems in Miami and the Write Stuff, a publisher of coffee table books and corporate biographies. I am a contributing writer to Broward’s Cultural Quarterly magazine and collaborate with local graphic artists to create promotional materials for clients ranging from manufacturers of plastic pallets and shopowners on Las Olas to interior designers and citrus growers.
When I’m not writing newsletters for Ed Morse dealerships, you’ll find me describing the merits of a Myrtha pool for my recreational design and construction client. In other words, I know a little about a lot of different subjects and have the luxury of gazing out my office window every day for inspiration.
Thanks to a vivid imagination I’ve written about diving, fishing and honeymooning in the Cayman Islands. Never been there! Never done that! And thanks to the Internet, I have a world of information at my fingertips.
I love what I do and I’m grateful that I have a talent that enables me to continually learn things, meet new people and be productive. So, if you’re ever at a loss for words, call me.

Joni Rosenthal is keeping herself busy. The following pictures were taken at the August luncheon by Joni with the tiniest camera. Maybe she missed her calling and should have been a photographer. Thanks Joni!
