FROM THE PRESIDENT

Our ladies have been very busy. We have had some fabulous guest speakers like Yael Yardeni. Not only was her topic on healing fascinating, the delivery of her speech was amazing. Dr. Karen Rowe and Michelle Case-Anderson had our October Canon Circle at the Lauderdale Yacht Club. What a wonderful night of networking and bonding. One of my favorite things is coming up, the Catamaran Cruise scheduled for December 7th. You will want to reserve your place early for this one.
November is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving. This is a time for thanks and gratitude. We have 6 new members. WEC is overflowing with incredible women that are incredible and do amazing things. The feeling of love, caring, gratitude, compassion etc., fills the room and you can’t help but feel these emotions. You instantly know that we are different. Our ladies stand by one another, care for each other and would never, ever think of hurting a fellow sister. We laugh together, eat together, play together and inspire each other to be the best we can possibly be. Yes, at times we even pray together. I want to thank each and every one of you for being the phenomenal ladies that you are.
November is also the month that we give back to the community. We have an optional event where you can bring canned goods or donate money or gift cards to the Cooperative Feeding Program, now known as “LifeNet4Families”. In the month of September alone, they provided l02,000 meals. They go through l0,000 pounds of food a day; a staggering amount of food!. Last year our ladies took a tour of the facility. The only thing I can say about that is that it is a life-changing event.
On behalf of the WEC Board and myself, we all wish you a Happy Thanksgiving… we can’t wait to see you again soon!

Book: Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Lauded for his sensitive memoir (My Own Country) about his time as a doctor in eastern Tennessee at the onset of the AIDS epidemic in the 80s, Verghese turns his formidable talents to fiction, mining his own life and experiences in a magnificent, sweeping novel that moves from India to Ethiopia to an inner-city hospital in New York City over decades and generations. Sister Mary Joseph Praise, a devout young nun, leaves the south Indian state of Kerala in 1947 for a missionary post in Yemen. During the arduous sea voyage, she saves the life of an English doctor bound for Ethiopia, Thomas Stone, who becomes a key player in her destiny when they meet up again at Missing Hospital in Addis Ababa. Seven years later, Sister Praise dies birthing twin boys: Shiva and Marion, the latter narrating his own and his brothers long, dramatic, biblical story set against the backdrop of political turmoil in Ethiopia, the life of the hospital compound in which they grow up and the love story of their adopted parents, both doctors at Missing. The boys become doctors as well and Vergheses weaving of the practice of medicine into the narrative is fascinating even as the story bobs and weaves with the power and coincidences of the best 19th-century novel. CANNON CIRCLE
Along with the monthly luncheons, members also get together in a more informal atmosphere during the year. These evening socials are called “Cannon Circles” and are hosted at members’ homes or businesses. The Cannon Circle is named for Past President Shirley Cannon who was known for her gracious and uplifting spirit.
Our next Cannon Circle will be hosted by Rosana Santos. See below for details:

GEMS: “GREET, EAT, MEET”

Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or whatever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. If you would like to be a part of GEMs, please contact Liz Mendel, GEM Coordinator at dolphintravelinc@aol.com or at her office, Dolphin Travel Inc., 954-351-2002.
This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level.
