weclogolr

Hi Ladies,

It is your mad hatter, energizer bunny junior, blog posting fool at it again…… Smile with tongue out

I wanted to make you aware how much fun we seem to be having in our private Linked In Group Page. I am sent emails with comments, so am aware you gals are liking it and am getting more requests to join daily.

You need to have a Linked In profile to join. It is free and easy. You don’t have to fill out a complete profile to join. Just join and then worry about it later. When you are a member in Linked In, search for our club name proper, all spelled out, “Womens Executive Club of Fort Lauderdale”. I will see a request when I log in and accept your request. If you are having trouble, email me  @ SKingsley@remax.net and I can invite you to join. You must be a Linked In member to access the site. EASY EASY EASY to do. We can help you if you need assistance.

We are getting outsiders wanting to join. I am telling them to come to a meeting and join our group, so I can happily accept them…… Please spread the word to other members that this group site is up and running. It is a great place to chat privately with members for synergy and sharing. Girl

Just another way for us to improve our daily communication with one another. Thanks  for taking the time to read this post. I look forward to your request to join, WEC ladies. Red rose

FINAL MESSAGE FROM OUTGOING PRESIDENT

wec

Dear Ladies:

This is my last letter to you as your President. I want to thank you for the most wonderful year. We started the year off with the White Orchid Retreat. We have upgraded the Retreat to a whole new level. I had to laugh at our last Retreat when you didn’t have anything to model, you modeled your own clothes and made your inner child very happy, and me too. (Maybe that is a sign we need to do another fashion show as you are extraordinarily good at being models).

Every President tries to put their special touch on the year and I tried very hard to spotlight all of our members and to give you the recognition that you deserve. I have watched many of you as you have developed from a shy wallflower into a woman of confidence. When you are surrounded with love and your fellow sisters, that truly love you, it makes this transition so much easier.

I have encouraged the invitations for lunch and our last GEM was a huge success. Our guys really seem to enjoy our events. It is wonderful to be able to call your fellow sisters and be able to laugh or cry, and just to know that you have the whole club to support you in your time of need or happiness.

Just because I am going to be a Past President, doesn’t mean I am going away. Actually, we are going to make our Past President’s a much more meaningful and active part of our organization.

We also have some surprises planned for you in the fall of this year that will, once again, take our WEC ladies to a whole new level.

I want to sincerely thank each and every one of you for your love and support this last year. It has been one of the most memorable years of my whole life. It is my fondest wish that, together, we will all become the very best we can possibly be.

Love to all of you,

Jan Bullard

Featured book: Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Azfon

From Publishers Weekly

Ruiz Zafón’s novel, a bestseller in his native Spain, takes the satanic touches from Angel Heart and stirs them into a bookish intrigue à la Foucault’s Pendulum. The time is the 1950s; the place, Barcelona. Daniel Sempere, the son of a widowed bookstore owner, is 10 when he discovers a novel, The Shadow of the Wind, by Julián Carax. The novel is rare, the author obscure, and rumors tell of a horribly disfigured man who has been burning every copy he can find of Carax’s novels. The man calls himself Laín Coubert-the name of the devil in one of Carax’s novels. As he grows up, Daniel’s fascination with the mysterious Carax links him to a blind femme fatale with a "porcelain gaze," Clara Barceló; another fan, a leftist jack-of-all-trades, Fermín Romero de Torres; his best friend’s sister, the delectable Beatriz Aguilar; and, as he begins investigating the life and death of Carax, a cast of characters with secrets to hide. Officially, Carax’s dead body was dumped in an alley in 1936. But discrepancies in this story surface. Meanwhile, Daniel and Fermín are being harried by a sadistic policeman, Carax’s childhood friend. As Daniel’s quest continues, frightening parallels between his own life and Carax’s begin to emerge. Ruiz Zafón strives for a literary tone, and no scene goes by without its complement of florid, cute and inexact similes and metaphors (snow is "God’s dandruff"; servants obey orders with "the efficiency and submissiveness of a body of well-trained insects"). Yet the colorful cast of characters, the gothic turns and the straining for effect only give the book the feel of para-literature or the Hollywood version of a great 19th-century novel.

CANNON CIRCLE

Along with the monthly luncheons, members also get together in a more informal atmosphere during the year. These evening socials are called “Cannon Circles” and are hosted at members’ homes or businesses.  The Cannon Circle is named for Past President Shirley Cannon who was known for her gracious and uplifting spirit.

Click here to see pictures from our last Cannon Circle.

GEMS: “GREET, EAT, MEET”

Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or whatever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. If you would like to be a part of GEMs, please contact Liz Mendel, GEM Coordinator at dolphintravelinc@aol.com or at her office, Dolphin Travel Inc., 954-351-2002.

This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level.

ASID Announces 2011 Class of Fellows: Congratulations, JOYCE SHORE!

wec

Congratulations to Joyce! What an honor! See the article below for more details…

Five Members Recognized with Society’s Highest Honor

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 10, 2011) | The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) today announced that five members have been officially inducted into the ASID College of Fellows. The title of Fellow, the highest honor a member can receive from ASID, is given in recognition of outstanding service and contributions to the Society, the profession and the interior design industry. The 2011 Class of Fellows will be honored on June 13, 2011, at Celebration – The ASID Design Awards, being held at ASID@NeoCon. The 2011 Class of Fellows:

Fran Colby, FASID
Since joining ASID in 1979, Colby has served in many leadership positions in the ASID Pennsylvania West Chapter, including president, on several committees at the national level and with the Interior Design Legislative Coalition of Pennsylvania. Along with awards for her diverse portfolio of corporate, hospitality, retail and healthcare environments, Colby is the recipient of two ASID presidential citations, an ASID Chapter Medalist award, numerous chapter presidential citations and recognition for service to her community.

Jamie Drake, FASID
Renowned for his masterful use of color, Drake frequently ranks among America’s best interior designers. His impressive roster of clients boasts Madonna and Michael Bloomberg, who, when elected Mayor of New York, engaged Drake to renovate and restore Gracie Mansion, as well as redesign various rooms at City Hall. A member of the Interior Design Hall of Fame and recipient of numerous awards for design excellence, Drake has also designed fabrics and other luxury products for top manufacturers.

Sonya Dufner, FASID
A talented designer recognized for her corporate and healthcare interiors, Dufner has excelled as a workplace and business strategist, helping her clients rethink their workplace processes and plan for the future. Currently a member of the ASID Board of Directors, Dufner also has served on national councils and committees, as well as leadership positions in the ASID Michigan Chapter.

Janice Linster, FASID
A founding partner of Studio Hive in Minneapolis, Linster is a dynamic presence in the ASID Minnesota Chapter and the Minneapolis interior design community.  She received the University of Minnesota Alumni Service Award for her ongoing work with students in the College of Design and on the college’s advisory board.  Formerly a member of the ASID Board of Directors, she has twice chaired national committees and held numerous leadership positions in her chapter. In addition, she has volunteered as a NCIDQ council delegate and with the InformeDesign Technical Review Board.

Joyce Shore, FASID
After holding numerous positions within the ASID Florida South Chapter, Shore served on the ASID Board of Directors. She then became involved in interior design legislation and was twice appointed to the Florida licensing board. Shore was chairperson of the Board when the Institute for Justice filed suit with the state, claiming the interior design law was unconstitutional. Her testimony and commitment are credited as instrumental in the U.S. Appeals Court’s decision to uphold the statute. She also represents Florida on the NCIDQ Delegates Council.  Shore has received numerous citations for her efforts and was inducted into the chapter’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

About ASID:

CHADIA MEROUEH IS FEATURED IN CBS 4’s NEIGHBORS 4 NEIGHBORS

Thank you to Pam Dearden who sent this featured article about Chadia’s business, Auto Tech and Body in Pompano, and how they have partnered up with Chariots 4 Charity!

Chariots 4 Charity

How 4 corners of the community connected to help a neighbor in need!

Chariots teamed up with Auto Tech and Body in Pompano to take in old cars, refurbish them and sell them with a portion of the profits going to local non-profits.

Sometimes they’re able to give a car to a deserving driver too. For example, Barbara Jackson who gave Neighbors 4 Neighbors a call before they connected her to Chariots.

"We made the donation of an Oldsmobile to Ms. Barbara Jackson down in Miami so that she can now take her 22-year-old daughter with autism to the doctor, go shopping, do all of the basic necessities in life that we all take for granted," said Janosik.

One of Chariots’ non-profit partners, the Super Swimmers Foundation, chose to have the car donated to Jackson. They said they know the challenges she faces because they teach many children with autism how to swim.

"Our motto is ‘Until the whole world swims’. We want children to swim safely and successfully in the water," explained founder Julie Gross.

So one old car brings on a whole new life for a local family and it’s an experience that Charles Harbert, the donor of the car, is proud to share with others.

"In this day in age people need to start helping their neighbors, that’s what it all comes down to a feeling that you’ve never experienced in your life – and it’s only a feeling you get when you give to people," said Harbert.
