MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

_MG_3350 web

Happy 2012 to all of our fabulous, outstanding WEC sisters!

Our first meeting to kick off this year will be on Tuesday, January 17th and I can’t wait to share with you all the great events we have planned for the year ahead.

As we move forward in 2012 we have so many excellent directions for growth within our group. Our affiliation with the 1000+ Club has created a number of opportunities for us to network with other women who share the same values of leadership and giving back to the community. The first such event is the Super Star Summit that will be happening on Saturday, January 28th at the Quality Inn Conference Center in Plantation. This event will feature some of the top business speakers on marketing and business promotion and part of the proceeds from the ticket sales will serve as a donation to the American Cancer Society. Laurina has worked extremely hard in making this very much a win-win opportunity for our group so I encourage everyone to attend.

I’m so excited about our annual jazz concert coming up Wednesday, February 8th. The featured singer Sophie Milman will knock your socks off with her sultry and beautiful renditions of jazz classics. Make sure you RSVP Laurina by January 25th. It will truly be one of those nights to remember.

For the bookies in the audience, coming up on January 23rd, Joni Rosenthal will be hosting the book club at her home. This month’s book, "The Paris Wife" is a must read for those who love historical fiction. The story of Ernest Hemingway, his first wife and their time in Paris. It brings to life the jazz age, the arts scene and the great writers that shaped modern literature. Please make sure you RSVP Joni to ensure your spot at this meeting.

I hope each and every one of you had a wonderful end to your December and are enjoying a great start to your new year.

Take care and I’ll see you at lunch.

Karen

WEC Gifts—A Bonanza for Girls at PACE

Thank you for including the girls at PACE in your holiday gift shopping.  Your selections were gorgeous, generous and hip.  There were so many gifts the staff decided to set up a Holiday Store where all 75 girls could pick out two gifts for family members.  As 70% of the girls come from families who live at or below the poverty level, the girls were grateful for the opportunity to give presents to those special people in their lives.

The girls had fun choosing among the  jewelry, notebooks, UNO and other games, watches, make-up, perfumed  lotions, candles, art supplies, and other treasures.  By request of the girls, all the remaining items will be displayed as incentive prizes for the bi-weekly raffles.  Girls earn raffle tickets based on good effort, behavior and attendance.  Your gifts included $800 in donations and  gift cards with a total value of $200. The gift cards are the prizes for the girls with the highest points in the raffles.

Your gifts brightened the holidays for the girls at PACE and will motivate them to do their best in 2012.  Thank you!

Happy New Year!!

Laurel Hendrickson, Judith Kolva-Schwabe, Chuck Schwabe, Laurina Anderson

Happy New Year!!  That was the gift that Judith Kolva-Schwabe and Chuck Schwabe had given us, Laurina Anderson and Laurel Hendrickson, by inviting us to their penthouse for an “Eve of Seven Fishes” dining experience.  We were privileged by the fine cooking provided us by Chef Chuckie!!  There was no expense spared.  Champagne and Caviar to Cab and Risotto with Calamari.  And, in the finest of dining, raspberry sorbet to cleanse the palette in between courses.  Thank you so much, Judith and Chuck, for the exquisite entry into 2012…oh, the 25 different firework displays around the cities were also spectacular as well.

Super Star Summit January 28th 2012

Christina Rowe, Cynthia Segal, Jan Bullard, Laurina Anderson

What a wonderful affair Christina Rowe and Barbara Theodosiou had put together for the Super Star Summit being held January 28th 2012.  They are honoring WEC’s Woman of the Year, Jan Bullard by choosing 1000+ Club for Cancer as their number one charity.  Please, if you don’t know about this major event for small businesses, please check out their website at www.superstarsummit.com.  There are top experts in the industry that will share their secrets, tips, and knowledge taking your businesses to the next level of success.  Plus, by purchasing a ticket for the event, they will be donating a substantial amount of money to this most worthy cause.  It is our goal to continue having more survivors of cancers, thriving and prospering in all their tomorrows!  Please join us on the 28th as myself, Laurina Anderson, Jan Bullard, Heidi Richards Mooney, and Kellie Kuecha will be hosts for this day.

Milman, a native of Russia, who is fluent in Russian, Hebrew, French and English, was born in the Siberian town of Ufa and moved to the Israeli port city of Haifa when she was seven. At 16, her family moved to Canada and as a teenager she absorbed pop, jazz and gospel, her favorites being Mahalia Jackson, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Nat "King" Cole and, at the top of the list, Stevie Wonder. Her self-titled debut was released in 2004 and followed in 2007 by "Make Someone Happy" (Linus/Koch).  In 2008, the Canadian singer performed around the globe, hitting landmark venues like the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center and New York’s Blue Note club, sharing stages with the likes of Chick Corea, Chris Botti and the Manhattan Transfer. Her second album, "Make Someone Happy," won the Juno Award for Jazz Vocal Album of the Year after it topped the iTunes jazz chart in the U.S. and Canada for months and cracked the top 5 on Billboard’s jazz chart.  JazzTimes referred to her as Canada’s hottest young jazz singer. NPR’s Weekend Edition praised her "classic jazz voice that evokes smoky lounges, softly clinking glasses and the cool of the night." DownBeat simply said, "she captivates."  The Los Angeles Times raved, "the sky’s the limit for this exceptional young talent."

DECEMBER HOLIDAY LUNCHEON WAS HELD DECEMBER 9TH

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

_MG_3350 web

Hi to all of our Wonderful WEC Women!

Happy Holidays to all of our great WEC women. Tis the season for joy, hope, reflection, peace and goodwill. In this time of gratitude, I personally want to thank all of you who make this the premier women’s business organization in Broward County. Each and every one of you are the reason our lunches and events are so successful. With each year our friendship and connections grow deeper. Our members truly reach out to one another in the good times and the bad. It is a true honor for me to be a member and lead you through this year.

This special season allows us to get in touch with what is so important in our lives. It’s really not about the ribbons or bows, it’s about the love. It’s about the friend who shares with you the difficulties her aging mother is having and how time is the most precious gift the two can share. It’s about the babies and the children who share their joy and love for all to see. It’s about our sons and daughters serving in the military and the gift of freedom we all share because of them. It’s about times shared with friends old and new and the good fortune and blessings we are so lucky to have in our lives.

With this in mind, I wish everyone of you a joyful holiday season. May we share with others less fortunate the abundance that we possess. A very happy, healthy and prosperous 2012 to all. Cheers!

On November 28 & 29 Susan Kingsley & her husband Timothy Proksch attended The Turning Point Retreat in Toronto, Canada. The retreat was presented by Buffini and Company, the world’s largest coaching & training company. Susan brought her usual “Pop-By” gifts for some of the attendees, this time being boxing santas/reindeer and snowmen pens for the upcoming Boxing Day holiday on December 26th and was recognized for her efforts by Brian Buffini, in front of 1150 attendees. For the remainder of the 2 day retreat, Susan was approached by attendees asking for her card, with the purpose of sending a referral for someone to buy in Florida. Hopefully, by sending a personal note and staying in contact with the agents, some Canadians will be purchasing real estate with Susan in 2012. Susan loves these retreats and attends 3 functions minimum on an annual basis. Anyone interesting in joining Susan, please let her know. The events are posted on www.buffiniandcompany.com website.
