Paula Deen, known for her charm and down-home Southern cooking, believes in giving back to fans. Especially the hungry ones.
We caught up with the famous chef and Emmy winner, who told us about her latest venture: delivering meat to food banks.
On Thursday, Deen will visit a Dania Beach Publix, where she will hand out 100,000 servings of protein. On the menu: Smithfield ham, turkey and sausages.
The charity stop is part of a nationwide project Deen created with Smithfield Foods and LifeNET4Families. “We plan on feeding over 20 million people over the next couple of years.”
The Georgia native says most people opt to donate canned goods instead of meat to food banks “because it’s too expensive.”
But like any good mom — she has two sons and one grandson — she knows a home-cooked meal is not table-ready without some protein. “We all need it.”
Armed with a smile and her famous quaint Southernisms, Deen enjoys helping others.
“I’ve met so many hungry families and children. It’s heartbreaking,” she says. “Because of the economy, more people are in need of food right now.”
