LENORE ALPERT IS PROTECTING OUR OCEANS!

Dr. Lenore Alpert is organizing Florida Oceans Day 2011 on March 22d in Tallahassee for the Florida Ocean Alliance. The event includes exhibits in the State Capitol and a Workshop on "Florida’s Oceans Generate Jobs and Economic Development." She is also writing a report on Marine Spatial Planning for Oceans Day. The report is funded by The Elizabeth Ordway Dunn Foundation, Florida Sea Grant, and Mote Scientific Foundation. Lenore volunteers as the Executive Director of the Alliance and solicits grants for the non-profit organization.

Lenore Alpert and her husband, Steve, visited friends over the holidays in San Francisco, where they lived for 20 years.  On the professional side, Dr. Alpert recently received a grant for the Florida Ocean Alliance from the Dunn Foundation to work on an oceans policy paper for the organization to share with state policymakers.

Dr. Lenore Alpert is working with the Florida Ocean Alliance and organizing the annual Florida Oceans Day in Tallahassee on March 10th. This year’s theme is "Florida’s Ocean Economy: Planning for Future Uses of Ocean Spaces." Events will include a panel of ocean users ( environmental groups, fishing interests, ports, petroleum council) and  a plenary speaker from UNESCO, Dr. Charles Ehler.  She is also writing a report on this topic for the Alliance, funded by the Henry Foundation, Moore Foundation, and the Mote Scientific Foundation.

Dr. Lenore Alpert and Dr. William Stronge, both formerly of Florida Atlantic University, are working on an update to their 2008 report for the Everglades Foundation. The report is entitled "The Economics of the Everglades Watershed and Estuaries."

Lenore Alpert is Making Waves with Ocean Management

Dr. Lenore Alpert attended the South Atlantic Workshop on Marine Spatial Planning in Charleston, S.C. in late September. The workshop, sponsored by The Nature Conservancy, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), and others, was organized to share information on national and regional policies on ocean management and marine spatial planning. Lenore represented the Florida Ocean Alliance, a nonprofit statewide organization where she serves as Executive Director, and discussed their recent report urging an ocean management plan for Florida.
