From the President

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a nice holiday season. It’s always hard to believe a new year is just starting. Anyone set a new year’s resolution?

This year’s Holiday Luncheon was a blast! Was it the wine? We had quite the rowdy crew. Thank you to Susan Kingsley for finding our musician Mark West. Thank you to Susan Kissinger for providing us with goodie bags, thanks to all the members who generously donated pens, journals and gift cards to Pace. Thanks to Suzie King for sending us the “right” story and to Carol Metevier for reading the “right” story. It was one of our most memorable meetings.

Congratulations to the following members who celebrated an anniversary:

Dee Moustakas: 25 years; Lee Sheffield: 20 years; Ann Meacham: 15 years; Melissa Rapkin: 5 years; Patricia McCarthy: 5 years; Suzie King: 5 years; Pam Dearden: 5 years; Jennifer Kelly: 5 years

It’s inspiring to see so many long-standing members in our organization.

We had a wonderful evening at Betsy Grant’s Cannon Circle. The Party Girl did not disappoint—her house was beautifully decorated as always. The champagne flowed, she had delicious pulled pork sandwiches and the most beautiful chinchilla. Betsy was the consummate holiday hostess!

Upcoming events in January include a Cannon Circle at Emily Rushin’s home on January 14th. Please rsvp to her asap as there is limited space. First come first served. Our speaker at the January 20th luncheon is Miami Herald Work/Life columnist Cindy Krischer Goodman, who will be speaking on Balancing Work and Life in the Digital Age.

Please keep checking the website (wecftl.com) for more updates.

Book Club

WEC Book Club:  THIS MONDAY – January 18th at 6:30pm.

We’re reading “To Have and Have Not” a classic by Ernest Hemingway set in Key West during Prohibition.  It’s short (only 272 pages!) and intriguing with incredible characters – SO you have plenty of time to read it!

We will meet at Emily Rushin’s home, 2636 Barbara Dr., Ft. Lauderdale.

Bring a dish to share – Emily will provide the wine and tea.

Please RSVP to Emily at wisemily@bellsouth.net or call 954-523-6342.

Directions to Emily’s: Take I-95 to exit at Davie Blvd. Go east and turn right on Route 1, continue south to 17th Street Causeway, make left and go east to Harbour Inlet Drive, immediately east of the Intracoastal Waterway, turn right going south two blocks until you must turn left onto Barbara Drive.  Emily’s house is the next to last on the right at the far end of Barbara Dr., with a brick and wood entrance light.

Here is B&N’s review:

Synopsis

Hemingway’s classic novel about contraband, intrigue, and love

To Have and Have Not is the dramatic story of Harry Morgan, an honest man who is forced into running contraband between Cuba and Key West as a means of keeping his crumbling family financially afloat. His adventures lead him into the world of the wealthy and dissipated yachtsmen who throng the region, and involve him in a strange and unlikely love affair.

Harshly realistic, yet with one of the most subtle and moving relationships in the Hemingway oeuvre, To Have and Have Not is literary high adventure at its finest.

All WEC members are invited to become “bookies”, where women meet in each other’s homes once a month to share in the love of books. Please contact Emily Rushin at wisemily@bellsouth.net or Deb McLaughlin at dmclaughlin@duncancenter.org for more information about WEC’s monthly book club meetings.

Cannon Circle

Along with the monthly luncheons, members also get together in a more informal atmosphere during the year. These evening socials are called “Cannon Circles” and are hosted at members’ homes or businesses.  The Cannon Circle is named for Past President Shirley Cannon who was known for her gracious and uplifting spirit.

The next Cannon Circle will be held at Emily Rushin’s home on January 14th. Please contact Emily Rushin at wisemily@bellsouth.net to RSVP.

GEMS: "Greet, Eat, Meet"

Happy New Year Ladies!

I hope everyone is looking forward to a year of great opportunities to form new and stronger friendships and business alliances.  You have already received an email from Susan Kingsley with the January-February GEM groupings.  Hosts, please send me an email with your selection of date, time and place so that we have a central clearing house.  Also, after the gathering, please email me the list of attendees.
Attendees, please be quick to respond to your host’s email.  If you should have a change of plans, please advise your host as soon as possible. If you would like to attend a current GEM event, you may contact me by email or phone to see if there are openings at the other hosts’ gatherings.
Kindest regards,
Liz Mendel
GEM Coordinator
P.S. For those of you new to WEC, here is an introduction to GEMs:
Formed in November 2002, members of WEC who choose to get together for an informal meeting are selected at random in small groups to greet, eat and meet. A Lead person is selected to set a time and place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or whatever. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. If you would like to be a host, please email Liz Mendel at dolphintravelinc@aol.com.

WEC: Through the Years

Joni Rosenthal, one of WEC’s cherished and esteemed members, wrote a moving article on how WEC remains at the forefront of women’s business organizations, primarily due to the love, warmth and comraderie its members have for each other.

Joni has been a part of WEC for 23 years now, and has volunteered in many capacities, most notably as WEC’s on-the-scene photographer, public relations coordinator and historian. Click here to read her article:

WEC Table and Reservation Policies

RSVP to luncheons ….Any member who fails to cancel a luncheon reservation within 48 hours or who fails to attend a reserved luncheon, will be billed at the current rate by VP of Finance. Each member will be entitled to one courtesy “no-show” per club year.
